“마드리드 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 참석한 이태리 밀라노의 송영호 목사님의 간증”

1. 멘토링 세미나에 오기 전의 나
영국에서 열린 목회자 멘토링 세미나 소식을 들었지만, 나이 제한이 있어 지원하지 못했습니다. 지난 유럽 장로회 총회에서 이종식 목사님과 사모님, 간사님들을 만나 마드리드 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 초대해 주셔서 기쁨과 감사로 참가하게 되었습니다. 유럽 장로회 총회에서 만난 목사님과 사모님은 너무나 따뜻한 분들이었고, 함께 오신 간사님들은 모두 가족 같은 분들이었습니다. 목회자와 간사님들 사이에는 마치 부모님과 자녀 관계 같은 친밀함과 따뜻함이 있었습니다. 신기함과 함께 멘토링 세미나에 참석하고 싶은 마음이 강하게 일어났습니다. 셋째 아들 하람이가 올해 18세가 되었습니다. 지난 18년 동안 아내와 함께 단둘이 외출해 본 적이 없었습니다. 멘토링 세미나를 앞두고 아내는 흔쾌히 동의해 주었고, 앞으로 이루어질 사역을 준비하면서 함께 참석할 수 있다는 것이 큰 기쁨이고 설렘이었습니다.

2. 어떻게 여기에 오게 됐는지
작년에 베이사이드장로교회를 방문하면서 교회에 대한 궁금증이 커졌습니다. 이민 교회를 목회하시는 동일한 조건에서, 어떻게 성도님들이 그렇게 밝고 환할 수 있을까? 긴장과 스트레스로 힘들어하실 수 있는 상황에서 목사님은 어떻게 아이들처럼 편안하게 웃으시며 섬길 수 있을까? 이유가 궁금하기도 했지만, 닮고 싶은 목회자, 배우고 싶은 교회로 남게 되었습니다. 제가 섬기고 있는 밀라노 은혜교회는 유학생 비중이 70% 이상을 차지하고, 성도들은 2-3년 안에 대부분 바뀌는 구조여서 무엇을 하려고 해도 오래가지 못하고, 사람을 양육해도 대부분 떠나는 상황에서 마치 밑 빠진 독에 물 붓는 느낌이었습니다. 유학생을 섬기는 사역은 계속해서 누군가 먹을 것을 준비해야 하는 사역이어서 많이 지치기도 했습니다. 그런데 짧게 방문한 베이사이드장로교회는 달랐습니다. 같은 이민 교회로서 도대체 무엇이 다른 것인가? 어떻게 이민 교회의 어려움을 넘어왔을까? 목사님의 목회 철학이나 목회 사역의 초점은 어디에 있는 것일까? 하나님께서 꼭 필요한 때에 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 참여할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 주셔서 귀한 강의와 가까이에서 교제할 기회를 주신 것에 감사드립니다.

3. 강의를 통해 느낀 점
25년 전 한국에서 Cal 세미나에 참석하여 제자 훈련에 대한 강의를 들었습니다. 너무나 귀한 강의였습니다. 그런데 막상 교회 현장으로 돌아와서 적용하고 실행하는 중에서 시행착오를 많이 겪었습니다. 32주간의 제자 훈련반은 한 주, 한 주 너무 무겁고 힘겹게 진행되었습니다. 내가 얼마나 준비 안 된 목회자이고, 제자 훈련을 진행하기에는 부족한 목회자인지를 절감했습니다. 이번에 강의를 들으면서 접하게 되는 제자 훈련은 처음부터 다르게 느껴졌습니다. 한 시간, 한 시간이 얼마나 실제적인 적용과 체험적인 말씀을 증거해 주시는지, 짧은 한 문장 속에 수많은 경험이 응축된 엑기스를 담고 있음을 깨닫게 했습니다. 성경 한 절을 풀어 주실 때에 실제적인 이해와 적용으로 다가오면서 눈을 열어 주시고, 삶을 녹여 주실 때, 설명하기 힘든 감동을 받았습니다. 이종식 목사님의 한 시간, 한 시간 강의는 정말 이민 목회를 하면서 한계에 부딪혀 주저앉고 포기했던 문제들을 풀어 주시고, 시원한 길을 뚫어 주시는 것 같았습니다. 첫 시간 목회자의 소명부터 시작해서, 군중 속에서가 아니라 하나님과의 일대일 만남을 강조하시는 부분까지 한 말씀, 한 말씀이 마음을 울리는 성령님의 음성처럼 다가왔습니다.

4. 강의 후에 어떻게 목회할 것인가?
가장 어렵게 생각되기도 하지만, 또한 가장 쉬운 문제라고 생각되기도 합니다. 제자 훈련 이외에 다른 대안이 있는가? 만약 없다면 더 시간을 허비하지 말고, 빨리 뛰어드는 것만 남았다고 생각됩니다. 한 가지 신중할 것은 교회와 성도들을 생각하면서 서두르지 않고 마지막까지 완주하려는 마음으로 준비 기도와 실천 계획이 필요한 것 같습니다. 핑계하거나 변명하면서 시간을 끌지 않도록 하겠습니다. 이미 마음에는 결단이 내려졌고, 어떻게 Install 할 것인가에 대한 하나님의 인도하심을 구하고 있습니다. 새롭게 시작하기에는 많이 늦었고, 현재 목회 환경이나 교회 여건이 만만하지 않지만, 중직자들을 위해 기도하며 1기 제자 훈련을 진행하기 위해 기도로 준비하며, 꼼꼼하게 준비하여 제자 훈련을 실행하려고 합니다. 과정이나 상황이 어떠하든 1기 제자 훈련을 마치고 기쁨과 감사로 축하하는 수료식을 가질 수 있도록 하나님 앞에 기도하며 엎드리도록 하겠습니다. 1기 제자 훈련이 마치면, 2기에는 장년들과 청년들을 구분해서 두 개의 제자 훈련으로 확장해서 기초를 만들어 가려고 합니다. 급한 마음보다는 설레는 마음이 더 큽니다. 그리고 여기까지 오셔서 우리를 맞이해 주시고, 따뜻함과 친절함으로 환대해 주시는 이종식 목사님과 사모님, 간사님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 유럽에 있는 목회자들을 위해 기도해 주시고, 격려해 주신 베이사이드장로교회 당회와 성도님들께 깊은 감사드립니다. 베풀어 주신 사랑에 삶으로 증거하는 목회자가 되겠습니다. 머리 숙여 감사드립니다.

Madrid Pastoral Mentoring Seminar Testimony by a pastor from Milan, Italy:

I first heard of the Pastoral Mentoring Seminar when it was held in the UK, but I could not attend at that time due to the age restriction. However, at the recent General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Europe, I met Reverend Chong Shik Lee, his wife, and their church staff, who kindly invited me to the Madrid Pastoral Mentoring Seminar. So, I was overjoyed and grateful to attend this seminar with great joy and gratitude. Reverend Lee and his wife were incredibly welcoming, and the staff treated me like family. The palpable warmth and unity of the pastor and staff resembled a parent-child relationship. Their camaraderie filled me with admiration and a strong desire to participate in the mentoring seminar. This year, my third son, Ha-ram, turned 18 years old. So, for the first time in years, my wife and I were able to get away together.
We were both excited to learn more and prepare for ministry.

My curiosity had been piqued during a visit to The Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside the previous year. I was struck by the radiant spirit of the congregants, especially considering it is a Korean church like my church. How is Reverend Lee able to serve with such ease and a smile on his face despite the inherent tensions and pressures of leading a church? I longed to learn from this church and emulate Reverend Lee. At my church in Milan, over 70% of our congregation is comprised of students, most of whom move away after two or three years. Consequently, my efforts often felt transient, and nurturing individuals felt like pouring water into a leaky bucket. Serving international students demanded constant preparation, which was exhausting.

However, The Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside seemed different. What sets this church apart? How has it overcome similar challenges that my church faces? What is its core ministry philosophy? I was able to learn much during this seminar. Thus, I am thankful that God provided me the opportunity to attend the Pastoral Mentoring Seminar at precisely the right moment.

Twenty-five years ago in Korea, I attended a CAL seminar and learned much about disciple training. However, when I tried to implement it back at my church, I encountered numerous setbacks. The rigorous, 32-week disciple training program proved challenging, and I realized my own inadequacy and lack of preparation to effectively lead it.

However, at this mentoring seminar, the approach to disciple training was fundamentally different. At each session, Reverend Lee offered practical insights that could be easily applied to our everyday lives. Each nugget of information was encapsulated with a wealth of experience. His explanations of Bible verses provided practical understanding and application, enlightening and profoundly moving me.
Reverend Lee’s lectures seemed to address the very issues I had neglected due to the hardships of leading a church. Listening to the lectures, I was encouraged to chart a new path forward. From the opening lecture on the calling of a pastor and the emphasis of personal time with God, every word throughout the entire seminar resonated deeply, like hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit.

One of the issues I struggled with is whether there is a viable alternative to disciple training. If not, I believe I must commit wholly to its cause and not delay. I must prayerfully proceed by preparing a well-defined action plan, approaching the task with a steadfast heart while being mindful of the congregants. I will not procrastinate by making excuses or justifications. I have already decided to lead discipleship training.
Now, I seek God’s guidance so that I can implement it in my church. It might seem too late to start anew, and the ministry is not without challenges. However, I hope to equip leaders in the church through prayer and meticulously prepare for the first term of disciple training. Regardless of the process or circumstances, I will kneel in prayer before the Lord, striving to complete the first term of disciple training and celebrate with joy and gratitude. When the first session of discipleship training is completed, I plan to build upon that foundation by expanding to two disciple training groups in the second term, one for adults and the other for the younger generation. With a sense of urgency, I am filled with excitement.

I sincerely thank Reverend Chong Shik Lee, his wife, and the staff members who welcomed us with such warmth and kindness. I am deeply grateful to the session and congregants of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside who served the pastors in Europe through prayer and much encouragement. I will strive to testify to the love you have shown. I am greatly indebted to you.
