진정한 부자

몇 년 전에 로드아일랜드에 위치한 뉴포트라는 곳을 방문한 적이 있었다. 그곳에는 옛날에 부자들이 살던 집이 몇 개 있는데 그 중에 나는 Breaker라는 제일 유명한 집을 방문했었다. 미국의 부자들은 어떻게 사는가 궁금했기 때문이다. 그곳에 들어가서 귀에 꽂는 녹음기로 설명을 듣는데 그 집은 1800년대 말에 지어진 것인데 정말 화려한 집에서 부자가 살았다. 집에는 가족을 위한15개의 방이 있었고 30명 이상이 되는 종들이 자는 작은 방들이 따로 있었다. 아침과 저녁을 먹는 식당이 따로 있고 파티를 여는 룸은 굉장히 컸다. 그 집 주인 되는 사람은 그곳에서 일 년이면 파티를 여러 번 열었으며 파티 때마다 100명이 넘는 사람들을 초대하여 직접 곡을 연주하였다고 한다. 그리고 그들이 살던 방을 보여주는데 방은 방마다 좋은 가구들로 채워져 있었고, 옷을 갈아입는 방도 너무 컸다. 그리고 각 방에는 목욕탕이 있었는데 대리석으로 된 욕조에 뜨거운 물이 나오도록 만들어졌다. 그런 모습은 부자가 참 호화롭게 살았구나! 하는 말이 저절로 나오게 했다.

그런데 그런 것들을 보고는 책이 가득 꽂혀 있는 서재로 갔는데 그곳에서 설명이 나오는데 비극적인 말을 들었다. 그렇게 부자로 산 사람의 자녀들이 일찍이 병으로 죽음을 당하게 되었다는 것이었다. 그것도 홍역 같은 것을 통해서 말이다. 그것을 들으며 아니 돈 많은 부자의 자녀들이 홍역도 치료받지 못하였다는 말인가 생각하다가 아, 그 시대에는 아직 홍역을 고칠 의학이 발달하지 않았었다는 것을 알았다. 그러면서 큰 부자라도 자기 자녀들의 죽음은 막을 수 없었다는 것을 생각하게 되었다. 그런데 그 후 놀라운 이야기를 듣게 되었다. 그러나 그들은 자녀를 잃었음에도 불구하고 예수님을 믿는 믿음 가운데 굳건히 설 수 있었다는 것이었다. 무슨 말인가? 부자일지라도 예수님을 믿었기에 자녀들의 이른 죽음에도 굳건하게 살다가 갈 수 있었다는 것이다. 그곳에서 나는 이런 생각을 하게 되었다. 그래서 결국 부자들도 다른 것에 소망을 둘 수 없고 오직 부활의 주님이신 예수님을 믿을 때에야 만이 소망을 가질 수 있었다는 것이었다. 물론 그렇게 좋은 집에 살던 사람 중에 자녀들만 병으로 세상을 떠난 것은 아니다. 그곳에 살던 모든 사람도 순서만 조금 달랐지 이미 이 세상 사람들이 아니다. 남은 것은 그들이 쓰던 집과 가구들뿐이다. 그래서 관광지가 되었다.

그렇다면 그렇게 잘 살았지만 100년을 넘기지 못하고 죽은 그들이 만일 예수님을 만나지 못했다면 복되다고 말할 수 있을까? 그런데 그 집 사람들은 예수님을 믿었던 것 같다. 그래서 복된 사람들이라고 할 수 있는 것이다. 그렇다. 하늘의 소망이 없다면 우리는 지상에서 아무리 잘 살아도 정말 불쌍한 사람들일 뿐이다. 잠시 후면 모든 것을 놓고 가야 하는 시간이 오기 때문이다. 그러므로 우리 믿는 자들은 항상 하늘의 소망이 있음에 감사해야 한다. 그리고 그것이 우리의 큰 복임을 기억해야 한다. 그러므로 우리가 이 땅에 모아 놓은 것을 가지고 부를 측정하지 말고 하늘에 저축하여 놓은 것을 가지고 부를 계산하는 우리가 되기를 바란다.

 

Few years ago, I visited Newport, Rhode Island. There are several old mansions there, which belonged to affluent families. One of mansions is named the Breakers. I visited the mansion because I wanted to know how wealthy Americans lived in the past. I listened to the audio as I took the self-guided tour. A rich family, the Vanderbilts, built the mansion in the late 1800s lived in the incredibly ornate house. There were 15 bedrooms for the family members, and there were enough smaller rooms to house over 30 servants. There were separate dining tables for breakfast and dinner. It also had an extravagant ballroom for parties. Vanderbilt, the owner, held several parties every year. Each time, he invited over 100 guests each time and personally played music for them. Not only that, but all of the bedrooms were filled with expensive, quality furniture. And each bedroom had a large changing room and a bathtub that was made of marble. The bathtubs were designed to access hot water. Seeing all this made me think that the Vanderbilts truly lived luxuriously.

Then, I walked into the library. The shelves were filled with books. As I looked around, the audio recording shared a sad story. Vanderbilt’s children died young due to illnesses like measles. At first, I thought, “Why could not they treat even something like measles even though they were rich?” Then, I realized that medical treatments for measles were not available yet at that time. This reminded me that even the rich cannot prevent the death of their own children. But after this, the recording went on to share something surprising. Although their children died, the Vanderbilts were able to stand strong because of their faith in Jesus. What does this mean? They were able to still live on despite the death of their children because they believed in Jesus. This made me think, “Yes. Even the rich cannot get hope any other way besides putting their trust in Jesus, our risen Lord. Obviously, Vanderbilt’s children were not the only ones who died. All the inhabitants of that mansion passed away at different times. They are no longer with us. Only their possessions and furniture have been left behind, which later on became a museum.

If the Vanderbilts had not met Jesus, can we say that they led a blessed life? But it seems like they believed in Jesus. And so, we can say that they were truly blessed. Even if we might be rich on earth, we would be truly pitiful if we did not have the hope of eternal life. In a short while, we would have to leave everything behind. Therefore, as believers, we must always be grateful for the hope of eternal life. And we should remember that this hope we have been given is a great blessing. Let us measure our wealth not based on the things that we have accrued on this earth but on how much we have invested in heaven.
