“도미니카에서 일어나는 일을 보며”

여러 해 도미니카에서 목회자 제자 훈련을 진행하면서 느낀 것은 목회자들의 학력이 너무 낮다는 것이었다.
어떤 목회자는 중학교도 졸업 못하고 목사가 되었다는 말을 듣고 놀랐다.
그러면서 그들의 설교가 왜 성령! 성령!이란 말만 되풀이하면서 진행되는지를 알게 되었다.
성경을 해석할 능력이 없었던 것이다.
그러다 보니 성도들의 신앙은 성장할 수 없었고 미신적으로 살아가는 것이었다.
나는 그 문제를 해결하기 위하여 고심하지 않을 수 없었다.
물론 고강도의 제자 훈련으로 그들의 삶에 변화가 일어나지만 그것만으로는 안 된다는 생각이 들었다.
그래서 기도 중 그들에게 공부할 수 있는 길을 열어주어야 하겠다고 생각했다.
그들이 공부하기를 싫어한 것이 아니라 기회가 없었기 때문이다.
나는 그 일을 이루기 위하여 기도하며 면밀히 계획하고 제자 훈련 장소로 사용하고 있는 대학교 총장을 만났다.
나는 그를 만났을 때 제자 훈련하는 목회자들에게 공부의 길을 열어주고 싶다는 말을 하였다.
그러자 돌아온 말은 나의 계획 전체를 이미 그가 알고 있는 것처럼 다 이야기 하는 것이었다.
나는 너무 놀라며 바로 그것이 내가 원하는 것이라고 말하였다.
제자 훈련을 마친 목회자들에게 교역자 프로그램, 대학 학위 프로그램과 석사 과정까지 길이 열렸다.
그리고 제자 훈련 단체와 대학교에서 추천하는 교수를 채용하기로 하고 장학금도 제공하여 전액 장학금을 주는 것에 합의하였다.
8월 전에 나는 도미니카를 다시 가서 준비된 합의서에 서명할 예정이다.
이런 과정을 거치면서 감사하는 바가 크다.
먼저는 도미니카 목회자들을 일으켜 도미니카에 새로운 은혜의 바람을 일으킬 수 있음에 감사하고
이런 일에 나와 우리 교회를 사용하시는 것에 감사하고
한 나라를 변화시키는 역사가 일어날 것을 기대하며 감사한다.

“Looking at the events that are occurring in the Dominican Republic”

After leading pastoral discipleship training in the Dominican Republic for several years, I realized that the majority of the pastors are undereducated. I was shocked to hear that some of them did not even graduate from middle school but became pastors. Then, I finally understood why they only shouted “Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit!” every time they preached. It is because they lack the skills to interpret the Word correctly. For this reason, their congregants cannot mature in faith but fall for superstitions. I could not help but be concerned about this situation. Although their lives are being transformed through the intensive discipleship training program, I realized that that was not enough. And so, during prayer, I came to decide that they should be given the opportunity to study. It is not that they did not want to study, but they did not have the chance to receive proper education. To make this happen, I prayed and made detailed plans. Then, I met with the chairman of the university at which we led the discipleship training program. When I met the chairman, I said that I wanted to provide a way for the pastors in the discipleship training program to be further educated. But as soon as I said this, the chairman replied by stating everything that I had planned! He spoke as if he already knew what I had in mind. In amazement, I told him that that was what I had planned. This made a way for us to form a pastoral track, college degree program, and a graduate program for the pastors who are in the discipleship training program. Also, we decided to hire professors recommended by the discipleship training organization and universities. Not only that, but we also agreed to provide full scholarships. I plan to sign this contract when I visit the Dominican Republic again before August.

Through all this, I am filled with gratitude. I am thankful that there is a new wave of blessings throughout the Dominican Republic that is raising up pastors. I am grateful that God is using me and our church for this amazing work. And I am filled with thanksgiving and expectations for the historical transformation that will take place in that country.
