“제4회 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 참석한 함부르크 열린문 교회 임수빈 목사님의 간증”

저는 한인이 거의 없는 독일의 한 소도시에서 약 10년 동안 목회를 했습니다. 서너 가정이 모이는 작은 교회였기에, 이중직을 감당하는 목사로서 제 목회는 거의 예배 인도가 전부였습니다. 주어진 자리에서 최선을 다했지만, 목회의 구조나 방향에 대해 깊이 고민할 여유는 많지 않았습니다.

4년 전, 함부르크 열린문 교회로 부임하게 되었습니다. 교회 규모는 독일 이민 교회 평균에 비해 결코 작지 않았지만, 말씀으로 충분히 훈련된 교회는 아니었습니다. 저는 이 교회에 제자 훈련이 필요하다는 확신을 가지고 목회를 시작했고, 실제로 제자 훈련을 시도하며 교회를 세워가고자 했습니다.

그러나 그 과정은 순탄하지 않았습니다. 성도들은 성경 공부와 제자 훈련의 차이를 충분히 인식하지 못했고, 제자 훈련을 목사가 자기 사람을 만들어가는 과정으로 오해하기도 했습니다. 그로 인해 제 목회는 스스로 표현하자면 ‘우당탕탕 소리가 나는 목회’였습니다. 열심히는 했지만, 마음 한편에는 늘 질문이 남아 있었습니다. “이 길이 맞는 걸까? 과연 될까?” 그리니까 저는 멘토링 세미나에 오기 전의 우유부단하고 갈팡질팡하는 목사였던 것 같습니다. 제자 훈련을 붙들고 가면서도 확신이 부족했고, 마음속에는 염려와 두려움이 함께 있었습니다.

사실 멘토링 세미나 소식은 2년 전에도 들은 적이 있었습니다. 그러나 그때는 교회를 비울 용기가 없었습니다. 교회적으로도 어려운 시기였기에 제 자리를 떠나는 것이 쉽지 않았습니다. 지금 생각해 보면 그때 참여하지 못한 것이 많이 아쉽습니다. 이번에 다시 세미나 소식을 들었을 때, 먼저 참여했던 동료 목회자의 간증을 듣게 되었습니다. 그 간증을 통해 제 마음에 용기가 생겼고, 이번에는 결단할 수 있었습니다. 제 목회와 제 자신을 다시 돌아보고 싶다는 마음으로 이 자리에 오게 되었습니다. 지금 돌아보면, 이 선택은 정말 잘한 결정이었습니다.

이번 멘토링 세미나를 통해 제가 가장 크게 얻게 된 것은 확신이었습니다. 제자훈련은 교회의 하나의 프로그램이 아니라, 교회의 생존 전략이자 동시에 사명이라는 사실을 더욱 분명하게 깨닫게 되었습니다. 비록 그동안 갈팡질팡했지만, 방향 자체는 틀리지 않았다는 확신을 얻게 되었습니다.

특별히 순모임의 성경적 의미를 분명히 이해하게 된 것이 큰 은혜였습니다. 현재 교회에서 교구를 순으로 전환하는 과정을 진행 중인데, 이번 세미나를 통해 그 변화의 의미와 방향을 마음으로 정리할 수 있었습니다. 왜 이 길을 가야 하는지, 왜 공동체가 함께 세워져야 하는지가 분명해졌습니다.

강의 중 가장 인상 깊게 남은 한 문장이 있습니다. “목사는 한 사람이 할 일을, 열 사람이 함께하게 만드는 사람이다.” 이 말씀은 제게 목회의 본질과 교회의 공동체성을 다시 생각하게 했습니다. 목회는 혼자 감당하는 일이 아니라, 성도들을 세워 함께 사명을 감당하게 하는 부르심이라는 것을 깊이 새기게 되었습니다.

이제 저는 염려와 두려움 속에서 계산하며 움직이기보다, 기도로 주님의 보좌 앞으로 더 담대히 나아가야겠다는 결심을 하게 되었습니다. 그리고 지금 교회에서 진행하고 있는 제자훈련을 믿음을 가지고 계속해 나가겠다는 결단을 하게 되었습니다. 결과를 조급해하기보다, 하나님께서 교회를 세워 가실 것을 신뢰하며 한 걸음씩 순종하며 나아가고자 합니다.

이번 멘토링 세미나를 통해 베풀어 주신 귀한 은혜에 대해 하나님께 모든 영광을 올려드립니다. 또한 하나님께서 앞으로도 새로운 길을 내실 것을 믿습니다. 아울러 귀한 세미나를 기도로 준비하시고 말씀과 삶으로 인도해 주신 이종식 목사님께 진심으로 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 목회의 본질과 방향을 다시 붙잡게 해주신 귀한 시간이었습니다. 세미나 전 과정 가운데 곁에서 묵묵히 함께해 주신 이성덕 사모님께도 감사드립니다. 또한 보이지 않는 자리에서 묵묵히 세미나를 섬겨 주신 김여호수아, 김리디아, 전영신, 이로라 네 분 간사님들의 헌신과 수고에 깊이 감사드립니다. 여러분의 섬김이 이 세미나를 더욱 풍성하게 만들었습니다. 마지막으로 물질과 기도로 이 모든 사역을 후원해 주신 베이사이드장로교회 성도님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 이 모든 만남과 섬김을 통해 주님께서 교회를 세워 가실 것을 믿으며, 받은 은혜를 현장의 목회 속에서 충실히 흘려보내는 목회자가 되겠습니다.

For about a decade, I served as a bi-vocational pastor in a small German city where there is only a very small Korean population. Since the church consisted of only three or four families, I mostly only led worship services. I did my best, but I did not have many opportunities to deeply contemplate the direction of the ministry.
Then, four years ago, I was appointed to serve at Hamburg Open Door Church. The congregation was bigger compared to the average German immigrant church. But it lacked a solid foundation on the Word. So, I began my ministry with the conviction that this church needed discipleship training. And until today, I have aimed to edify the church by making disciples.
However, the process proved challenging. The congregants didn't fully grasp the distinction between Bible study and discipleship training. Some even mistakenly thought it was a way for me to cultivate my own followers. Consequently, my ministry became chaotic and turbulent. I worked diligently, but I wondered, "Is this the right approach? Will it truly be effective?" Before attending the pastoral mentoring seminar, I was indecisive and hesitant. Even though I was committed to discipleship training, I lacked confidence. Instead, anxiety and fear plagued my heart.
I heard about the pastoral mentoring seminar two years ago, but I lacked the courage to leave the church unattended, even for a week. It was a trying period, making it difficult for me to step away. Looking back, I regret not participating then. So, when I heard about the seminar again, I listened to the testimony of a fellow pastor who had attended the seminar previously. His testimony emboldened me, and I decided to attend, hoping to re-evaluate my ministry and myself. In retrospect, it was a great decision.
The most significant benefit I gained from this mentoring seminar was conviction. I realized more clearly that discipleship training isn't merely a church program but a vital strategy for the church's survival and mission. Although I had been wavering, I gained the conviction that my overall direction was correct. Understanding the biblical significance of small group or cell group meetings was particularly valuable. My church is currently in the process of making small groups. Through this seminar, I was able to clarify the meaning and direction of the new change. It became clear why we must pursue this path and why the church must be built up together.
One thing struck me during the lectures. Reverend Lee said, "A pastor is someone who gets ten people to do together what one person would do alone". This made me rethink the essence of ministry and the communal nature of the church. I realized that ministry isn't a task to be handled individually but a calling to equip the congregants to fulfill the mission together as one body.
Now, instead of calculating my every move fueled by anxiety and fear, I am resolved to approach the Lord's throne in prayer more boldly. And I am committed to continue to lead discipleship training in faith. Rather than expecting immediate results, I intend to move forward in obedience, trusting that God will build the church.
I give all glory to God for the ways He has blessed me through this mentoring seminar. I believe that God will continue to pave the way for my church.
And I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Reverend Chong Shik Lee, who led this valuable seminar with prayer and guided all the pastors who attended by sharing the Word and his own experiences. It was a precious time that allowed me to grasp the essence and direction of ministry. I also thank his wife, who quietly supported us throughout the entire seminar.
