“대한민국 부안 주산 교회에서 배현수 목사님의 간증”

1. 멘토링에 오기 전의 나?

저는 전북 부안군 주산면에 위치한 주산 교회에서 19년째 농촌 목회자로 사역하고 있습니다. 연세 드신 교우들을 상대로 목회하다 보니 나도 모르게 안정적이고 평안한 상태를 안주하려는 마음이 짙었습니다. 하지만 한편으로는 목회 본질에 대한 목마름과 변화에 대한 갈망도 있었습니다. 그래서 여러 세미나도 참석하면서 대안과 해법을 찾으려고 했지만 우리 지역과 교회와는 전혀 동떨어져 회의와 정체 속에 시간만 보내는 것 같아 안타까움 속에 현재에 이르게 되었습니다.

2. 어떻게 여기까지 오게 되었는가?

형제처럼 지내는 유병희 목사님의 소개를 받고 이번 멘토링 세미나가 내 인생과 목회에 놀라운 전환점이 될 것을 기대하며 만남 속에서 역사하실 하나님의 일하심을 소망하며 참석하게 되었습니다.

3. 강의를 통해 느낀 점?

이민 목회의 치열한 환경 속에서도 35년이 넘도록 제자 훈련을 목회의 핵심가치로 삼아 교회를 건강하게 성장시키신 이종식 목사님은 이민 목회의 모델일 뿐만 아니라 한국 교회 및 농촌 목회의 모델이 되실 분이라는 확신이 듭니다. 근거는 4가지입니다

1) 한 영혼에 집중하는 본질 추구 목회자

목사님은 대형건물보다 *한 사람의 변화*에 목회의 최우선 가치를 주셨다는 점입니다. 복음의 능력을 신뢰하여 환경이나 조건에 구애를 받지 않고 오직 복음의 능력만을 믿으며 제자 훈련에 정념 하셨습니다. 한 영혼이 주님의 제자로 바로 서는 것을 보면서 진정한 목회의 보람을 느끼시는 모습이 감동이 되었습니다.

2) 제자 훈련을 단순한 목회 프로그램이 아닌 교회의 문화와 체질로 정착시킨 목회자

사실 저는 제자 훈련을 목회 프로그램 중 하나로 여기며 그 순수성을 변질시키는 목회자를 보며 제자 훈련은 실패한 것으로 치부했었습니다. 하지만 이종식 목사님은 부모 신앙이 자녀 세대까지 자연스럽게 전수되도록 다음 세대까지 제자 훈련으로 교회를 지속 성장시키시는 대안이 되셨다는 점이 놀라웠습니다.

3) 목회 노하우를 전수하는 목회자

저는 지금까지 농촌 목회자에게 재정을 지원하는 목회자는 보았어도 목회 노하우를 지원하는 목회자는 이종식 목사님이 처음이십니다. 자신의 목회 노하우를 아낌없이 공유하며 오롯이 본질 목회를 추구하되 그 해답을 제자 훈련에서 찾도록 도우시는 모습, 후배 목회자에게 긴밀하게 소통하고 싶어 멘토링 세미나를 여시고 삶을 나누시는 실천적인 리더십은 감동 그 자체입니다.

특히 경험이 없으면 성경대로 할 것이며, 일꾼이 없으면 기도하라는 실제적이고 여과 없는 원칙 중심의 조언은 가슴에 두고두고 간직하겠습니다.

4) 속도보다 방향을 보여주는 목회자

목회라는 하나님 나라의 과업에 조급함을 버리고 하루하루 매진하여 긴 호흡으로 교인들의 성장을 바라보시는 이종식 목사님의 강의와 모습 속에서 이 시대의 참된 목회자의 자세와 태도를 배울 수 있었습니다.

4. 강의 후 어떻게 목회할 것인가?

1) 제자 훈련하는 교회로의 패러다임 전환

이제 우리 주산 교회는 제자 훈련하는 교회가 되겠습니다.
학력이 낮거나 연령이 높은 교우들을 고려하여 교재를 쉽게 재구성하고 관계와 나눔 중심의 소그룹 활동으로 변형하여 운영해 보겠습니다.
농번기, 농한기를 고려하여 제자 훈련 시점을 결정하고 단순히 지식 전달이 아닌 마을 공동체 속으로 들어가 생활 밀착형 제자도를 실현하여 예수님처럼 살아보는, 일대일 양육과 밀도 높은 소그룹 제자 훈련을 실행하겠습니다.

2) 농촌 교회 체질 개선

흔히 강단 설교와 프로그램 중심에서 한 영혼에 집중하는 소수 정예부대로의 교회로 체질을 개선하겠습니다. 기존의 전통 교회의 좋은 전통은 지키면서도 복잡했던 프로그램 중심 목회에서 한 영혼 중심의 목회로 본질을 지키는 게 가장 성경적인 목회이며 지금 우리 교회의 체질에 새로운 영적 활력을 불어 넣을 수 있는 최적의 골든 타임이라 여겨집니다. 저희같이 규모가 작고 환경이 어려울수록 한 영혼을 예수 그리스도의 온전한 제자로 삼는 일이 예수님의 지상 명령을 지키는 일이자 농촌 교회로서의 빛을 발하는 길이라 확신합니다.

Weekly Devotional with Pastor Chong Shik Lee

For 19 years, I've served as a rural pastor at Jusan Church in the Jeonbuk Province of South Korea. Over the years, I have settled into a comfortable routine serving an elderly congregation. But recently, I yearned for a change in the ministry. I attended various seminars seeking possible solutions, but they seemed far-fetched from the reality of my church. The seminars only left me feeling skeptical and stagnant. However, I was introduced to this mentoring seminar by a close colleague pastor. So, I attended this seminar with the hope that it would become a turning point in my life and ministry. I hoped to witness God's work through this seminar.
Through the Pastoral Mentoring Seminar, I realized that Reverend Chong Shik Lee is a model not only for immigrant churches in America but also for the churches in Korea. He has centered his ministry on discipleship for over 35 years despite the challenging context of Korean immigrant ministry. Through his dedication, his church has thrived.
I was convicted by Reverend Lee because he seems to be a pastor who is for the people. Rather than prioritizing bigger buildings or church possessions, Reverend Lee focuses on the transformation of individuals. Trusting in the power of the Gospel, he has devoted himself to discipleship training. He believed that God's power will work through the disciple training program, no matter what. I was deeply moved by his devotion to disciple each person in the church.
Reverend Lee also established discipleship training as the church's culture, not merely a program. Having seen pastors treat discipleship as just another ministry program, thereby compromising its integrity. I used to dismiss the training as a futile endeavor. However, I was amazed when Reverend Lee demonstrated how discipleship training sustains church growth across all generations. It was amazing to see that through discipleship training, the faith of parents has been naturally passed down to their children.

Not only that, but Reverend Lee did not hesitate to share the copious amount of know-hows of ministry. Until now, I have met pastors who provide only financial support to ministers. But Reverend Lee is the only one who offers support, wisdom, and advice on how to do ministry. It was truly inspiring to witness him selflessly share his accrued knowledge of ministry, his goal in doing ministry, and advice on how to implement discipleship training in the church. And through practical leadership, he has opened the mentoring seminar to share his heart for the Lord with pastors of the next generation. One of the most impressionable things he has said is, "If you lack experience, just do ministry according to the Bible. And if you do not have helpers, pray." Through the lectures, I learned to be a true pastor, I must faithfully strive to support the growth of my congregants.
I would like to make my church a disciple-making church. Although my congregants are older and not as well-educated, I will adapt the discipleship training material so they can easily understand. I will also schedule discipleship training sessions around the farming seasons so they could attend. And I hope the church grows through deeper fellowship through small groups. Rather than simply giving them knowledge, I hope to nurture and disciple each person in the church so that everyone can live a life of a true disciple of Jesus. So, instead of focusing on delivering the most curated message on the pulpit, I will prioritize discipling each soul. I believe that this is what true ministry should be like.
This seminar has breathed new spiritual vitality into our church. I am convinced that even a small rural church like ours could fulfill the Great Commission and shine the light of Jesus as each person in the church matures as a disciple of Christ!
Reverend Chong Shin Lee! My mentor and a model of a true pastor! I sincerely thank you, your wife, the associate pastors and all the administrative staff for their service. I return to Korea with joy in my heart. I will implement discipleship training in my church as I have been taught.
