“선행을 할 때 먼저 생각할 것”

언젠가 추운 겨울에 기도원 가는 길에 늘 동냥을 하는 덩치가 큰 거지가 안돼 보였다.
나는 성탄절을 맞이하여 엔젤프로젝트의 일환으로 그에게 작은 선물을 하나 하기로 했다.

추운 날 길에 서서 동냥을 하자면 목도리가 필요하게 보였다.
그래서 목도리 하나를 사서 그에게 건네주게 되었다.
“추운 날 이 목도리하고 따뜻하게 지내세요”라고 말하면서 …

그때 내가 기대했던 것은 그의 환한 웃음이었다.
그러나 정작 그는 선물을 받고는 아쉬운 표정을 지었다.
이유를 물으니 자기는 목도리가 필요 없다고 하였다.
지금도 목도리는 있기 때문이고 그것을 받으면 어디에 둘 곳이 없다는 것이었다.

나는 급히 주머니에 있는 잔돈을 그에게 주었다.
그러자 그의 얼굴은 아주 행복한 얼굴로 바뀌었다.

그날 내가 그에게 선물로 주려 한 목도리는 거의 백 불 정도 되는 값진 것이었다.
그러나 그에게는 그것은 한낱 짐에 불과했다.
그리고 내가 건네준 잔돈은 십 불 미만이었다.
그러나 그는 그것을 받고 너무 기뻐했다.

그때 생각했다.
선행도 상대방의 형편에 따라 하는 것이라고
내가 필요하다고 생각하는 것이 아니라 상대방이 필요한 것을 베푸는 것이라고...
한번 생각해 보고 선행을 하자.
내가 하고 있는 행동이 상대방이 필요한 것인지 아니면 짐인지를...
그리고 내가 하나님께 하는 헌신도 하나님이 원하시고 기뻐하시는 것인지...

“Things to Consider Before Doing a Good Deed”

One cold winter day on my way to a retreat center, I felt compelled to help a beggar who was always there. I decided to give him a small gift using the Angel Project funds I received from church. It seemed to me that he needed a scarf because he was on the streets in the cold. So, I bought one for him. As I gave it to him, I said, “Please wear this scarf and stay warm”.

I expected him to smile, but when he saw my gift, he looked disappointed. When I asked him if he didn’t like it, he said he didn’t need a scarf because he already had one. If he took another, he would have nowhere to keep it.

I quickly gave him the spare change I had in my pocket. At this, his face transformed
into a big smile. The scarf I bought for him was about a hundred dollars. Yet, to him, it was nothing more than a burden. On the other hand, the change I gave him was less than ten dollars. But he was so joyful to receive it.

This made me realize that when doing something good, I should consider the needs of others and give not what I think they need but what the other person really needs.
Let’s think before we do a good deed if it will truly be helpful to others.
And may our devoted works for the Lord be pleasing to Him.
