“제6회 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나에 참석한 성요셉 목사님의 간증”

제6회 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나에 참석하게 되어서 먼저 감사와 영광을 하나님께 돌립니다. 바쁜 이민 생활 중에서 3박 4일의 시간을 내는 것은 결코 쉽지 않았습니다. 이번에 아내와 함께 참석하게 되어서 더 많은 것을 준비하고 와야 했습니다. 매일 이루어지는 새벽기도회와 아내가 돌보던 손자까지 여러 어려움이 있었지만 아내가 제자 훈련 세미나는 처음이었고 저도 다시 한번 도전 받고 싶은 마음에 포기하지 않고 참석을 추진했고 이렇게 참석하게 되었습니다.

아내는 농담처럼 당신 나이가 이제는 세미나를 인도해야지 무엇을 얼마나 더 배워야 하느냐고 하면서 몇 번이나 참석하지 말자고 했습니다. 그러나 아내를 설득하고 와야 할 환경을 만들어서 왔습니다. 스케즐표를 보고는 순간 ‘왜 왔을까’하는 생각이 잠시 들었지만 시간 시간마다 열정을 부으시는 이종식 목사님의 강의에 하나둘씩 마음에 은혜와 감동 그리고 도전이 왔습니다.

강의를 들으며 잠시 쉬는 시간에 걸으면서 식사 때 이종식 목사님 사모님의 이야기가 떠올랐습니다. 그리고 교회 건물을 바라보는데 그곳에 예수님의 눈물과 함께 이종식 목사님 부부의 눈물도 함께 있는 것을 보는 듯 했습니다. 교회 사역으로 세미나 참석을 만류하고 거부하던 아내는 ‘잘 왔다’라고 이런 배움의 시간이 필요하다고 하면서 받은 은혜를 저에게 나누어 주었습니다.

교재를 풀어가면서 정성을 다해 예화를 드시면서 성경의 말들을 일상의 언어로 풀어내시는 이종식 목사님께 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 너무나 쉽게 목사님의 이야기를 예로 드시면서 그 귀한 진리들을 일상으로 풀어내시는 것입니다. ‘아! 이런 것이구나!’하는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 그래서 한번 모임에 2시간 이상의 절대 시간이 필요하겠다는 생각도 들었습니다.

헌신적인 그리스도인들은 헌신적인 양육으로 만들어진다는 것을 생각하게 되었습니다. 지금 제 마음엔 여러 가지 생각이 듭니다. 제자 훈련을 하는 지금의 제 모습을 떠올렸습니다. 그리고 내가 얼마나 게을렀던 목회자였는지도 생각했습니다.

단 10여 명의 제자 훈련생이라도 1,000명의 숫자로 여겨 준비해야 한다는 목사님의 말씀을 다시 생각했습니다. 하나라도 더 주고 싶어 하시는 목사님의 마음이 ‘이 정도면 됐지!’라는 제 마음을 다시 흔들었습니다.

이제 사역의 현장으로 돌아가 다시 시작해 보겠습니다. 나는 내 몫을 하면 나머지는 하나님께서 하실 줄 믿고 오늘 해야 할 나의 몫을 감당하겠습니다.

Weekly Devotional with Pastor Chong Shik Lee

Testimony of a pastor who attended the New York Light 6thPastoral Discipleship Training Seminar:

First, I give thanks and glory to God for the opportunity to attend the 6th Pastoral Discipleship Training Seminar. It was not easy to take time off for 4 days and 3 nights for the seminar. And this time, I was able to attend the seminar with my wife, which meant there were more things to prepare. There were also several difficulties I had to deal with before attending the seminar, including daily early morning prayer meeting and finding childcare for my grandchild. However, since my wife had never attended the discipleship training seminar and because I wanted to be challenged once again, we made the necessary arrangements and attended the seminar. Before the seminar, my wife half-joked around and told me not to attend the seminar. She said, “Given your age, you should be the one leading seminars, not attending them. How much more do you need to learn?” However, I managed to persuade my wife and attended the seminar.

After we arrived at the seminar, when I looked at the schedule, I briefly regretted my decision. But with every session, I was moved and challenged as Pastor Chong Shik Lee poured out his heart into the lectures. I was deeply moved by him as he explained each chapter of the discipleship training book. He shared heartfelt illustrations, drawing from his own life. And he made the Bible more understandable by using vernacular verbiage. While attending the lectures, I realized that at least a few hours should be invested in teaching each discipleship training class.

In between the lectures, I had the opportunity to talk with Pastor Chong Shik Lee’s wife. And as I looked at the church buildings, I could sense that the church was built on the tears of Christ, Pastor Lee and his wife. Although, initially, my wife felt it was too much for us to attend the seminar due to ministry obligations, she confessed, “It was good that we came. This time of learning was necessary”. And she shared the blessings she had received through the seminar.

Through the seminar, I realized that true Christians are formed through dedication and training. Although I have been leading discipleship training at my church, I see now that I have been truly lazy. I keep thinking what Pastor Lee said—that we should put in much effort in preparation for each class, even if there are only 10 people; we should prepare as if there were 1,000 people to train. And it was inspiring to see that despite the tight schedule, Pastor Lee wanted to teach us at least one more thing.

Now, I will return to my ministry and start with a renewed heart. I believe that if I do my part, God will do the rest. So, I will carry out my responsibilities faithfully.
