“제6회 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나에 참석한 커네티컷 지역에서 목회하시는 목사님 간증”

2년 전, 저는 플로리다에서 개척한 교회에서 2년 만에 어려움을 겪게 되었습니다. 너무 힘들었지만 버텨야 했고 2년을 버텼더니 풀어주시는 것 같았습니다. 하지만 개척했던 교회를 떠나는 것은 쉽지 않은 감정이었습니다. 사임서를 제출하고 사임하기 전 기간에 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 참석했습니다. 모든 순간순간이 다음 목양지를 준비하는 시간이었습니다. 하나님의 극적인 은혜로 커네티컷에 담임 목회자로 오게 되었습니다.

지난 1년여간 멘토링 세미나에서 배운 사역의 지침을 시도해 보고 제자훈련을 실시했습니다. 교회는 한편으로는 예배 분위기가 좋아지고 있으며 한편으로는 해묵은 감정들이 마찰하며 긴장감을 연출하고 있습니다. 지난 주간에는 교회의 리더십들 간에 감정싸움이 몇 차례 일어난 것입니다. 지난 주일은 성찬이 있었는데 성찬을 안 받으시는 분도 있고 성찬을 화난 표정으로 받은 분도 있고. 그들에게 성찬을 나눠주시며 가까이서 표정을 직접 보신 분도 있었습니다. 이런 상황을 뒤로하고 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나에 초청받아서 오게 되었습니다.

세미나에 참석하면서 베이사이드장로교회는 그사이에 더 성장해 있었고, 교육과 훈련과 선교와 섬김에 거침이 없어 보였습니다. 섬기는 성도들의 표정에서 물 떠온 하인들에게서 예수님의 기적을 본 감격이 보였습니다. 이종식 목사님께 지혜와 건강이 한없이 부어지기를 기도하는 마음입니다. 제자 훈련 교재를 오랫동안 다루었는데도 이 목사님과 함께 살펴보면서 순간순간 챙길 것이 많았습니다. 목회적인 지혜와 목양에 기반한 좋은 예시들을 많이 배웠습니다. 제 삶과 사역에서 너무 어려운 상황에서 세미나에서 은혜받으며 말씀과 목양만을 생각하며 잠시 나와 있게 된 것이 참 다행스럽습니다. 하나님께 맡겨드립니다. 성령께서 각 리더들의 마음을 만져주시고, 성령의 감동으로 치유하여 주시기를 기도합니다.

시간이 참으로 빨라 벌써 수료를 앞두고 있습니다. 이번에 유럽에서 오신 목사님들을 많이 뵈어서 특히 좋았습니다. 어떤 면에서는 저보다 더 쉽지 않은 환경에서 기쁨으로 사역하고 계셨습니다. 베이사이드의 뉴욕 라이트 사역을 통하여 온 열방에 등대가 되어 서로 빛들의 연대가 이루어져 가는 것 같습니다. 저도 감사함으로 사역하겠습니다. 하나님께 맡겨드리는 것을 훈련하겠습니다. 조금 더 외롭겠습니다. 사람들과 대화하다가 오해의 빌미를 제공하는 것보다 성령과 교통하며 하나님 앞에서 더 많이 울고 웃고 묵상하겠습니다. 제가 먼저 제자 되어 온 성도들을 주님의 제자로 세우는 사역을 끝까지 감당하겠습니다.

베이사이드장로교회가 등대가 되어 주어서 감사합니다. 귀 사역을 통하여 열방에 제자들이 일어나고 거룩한 네트워크가 하나님 나라의 새로운 부흥을 일으킬 것을 기대합니다.

New York Light 6thPastoral Discipleship Training Seminar testimony of a pastor from Connecticut:

Few years ago, I encountered some difficulties just after two years since I planted a church in Florida. It was extremely difficult, but I endured it until two years later, God led me elsewhere. It felt like I was finally released from the struggles of church planting, but it was not easy leaving the church I had planted. I actually attended the previous pastoral mentoring seminar after I submitted my resignation but before I actually stepped down from the church. So, every moment during the seminar was a time for me to prepare for my next ministry. Then, by God’s grace, I was called to a church in Connecticut to be its senior pastor. Over the past year at the church, I tried to implement what I had learned during the mentoring seminar. And I even initiated discipleship training at the church.

On one hand, the church worship services significantly improved. But there were still issues that caused conflict among the church members. Last week (a week before the Pastoral Discipleship Training Seminar), some of the church leaders argued with one another about me, whether I should stay on as the senior pastor. This past Sunday, we had communion during service. But some people didn’t partake in it, and some others participated but was angry. Those who distributed the communion elements saw the congregants’ faces up close and noticed that they were angry. Although this was going on, I put it behind me and accepted the invitation to attend the Pastoral Discipleship Training Seminar.

When I arrived at the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside to attend the seminar, I realized that the church had grown even more since the last time I had visited for the mentoring seminar. And all the ministries of the church, including the educational department, missions, worship services, and discipleship training seemed to be thriving unhindered. And the congregants who served the pastors at the seminar looked as joyous as the servants who drew water at the wedding at Cana mentioned in the Bible. I pray that endless wisdom will be poured on Pastor Chong Shik Lee and that he will stay healthy.

Although I taught from the discipleship training curriculum for many years, I still gleaned a lot of new things through Pastor Lee as he reviewed them with us. I also gained a lot of pastoral wisdom and excellent advice on how to shepherd as a pastor. And I hope to draw examples from my own life and ministry to use as illustrations.

It is truly a blessing that I was able to escape my current problems at home and attend this seminar. Through this seminar, I was able to just focus on the Word and pastoral care. I entrust everything to God. I pray that the Holy Spirit will touch the hearts of my church leaders and heal them.

Time has flown by, and it is already near the end of the seminar. I was especially glad to meet many pastors who came from Europe this time. Many of them do ministry in more challenging environments than I am, but they still serve with joy. Through this New York Light ministry, it seems like a solidarity of lights is forming. And this great light is being used by the Lord as a beacon to all nations. Like them, I will continue to do ministry with a grateful heart. I will practice entrusting things to God even more. And instead of spending more timetalking with people, which might lead to misunderstandings, I will all the more communicate with the Holy Spirit and spend more time crying out to the Lord and meditating on the Word. I will first become a disciple myself, and then faithfully carry out the ministry of making disciples in my church.

Thank you, the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside, for being a beacon. I believe that God will use this ministry to make more discipleship throughout the nations And may He use this ministry to bring about a new revival for the Kingdom of God.
