“제6회 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나에 참석한 안현일 목사님의 간증”

2025년 여름 사역을 마무리하면서 9월에 있을 목회자 제자 훈련 세미나 참석이 너무나 기대되었습니다. 작년에 멘토링 세미나를 통해 이종식 목사님의 목회와 베이사이드장로교회에 역사하신 하나님에 대해 배울 수 있었던 좋은 기억이 있었기 때문입니다. 1년 만에 다시 뵌 목사님들과 반가운 만남으로 시작된 이번 세미나는 첫 시간부터 은혜와 감동이 넘쳤습니다. 제가 섬기는 교회에서 제자 훈련을 시작하기에는 아직 준비가 안 된 거 같아 이번 기회에 강사님으로부터 내용을 잘 배워 그대로 교회에서 시행해 보고 싶은 마음으로 매 강의에 참석하게 되었습니다.

이번 세미나를 통해 가장 먼저 배운 것은 제자 훈련 인도자가 복음에 대한 열정과 제자 삼으라고 말씀하신 예수님의 말에 기꺼이 순종하는 마음이 정말 중요하다는 사실이었습니다. 30년 이상 수백 번의 제자 훈련을 인도하셨을 강사님이시지만 매번 할 때마다 새로운 은혜를 주시고, 새로운 마음으로 하신다는 말에 큰 은혜와 도전받게 되었습니다. 인도자의 확신과 헌신, 그리고 희생 없이는 예수님의 제자가 만들어질 수 없다는 이 깨달음은 저를 다시 한번 돌아보며 앞으로 제자 훈련을 시작하고자 하는 저의 모습을 점검하는 시간이 되었습니다. 예수님의 마음으로, 그리고 예수님 제자의 마음을 가지고 훈련에 참여하는 소수의 사람이라도 몇천 명을 놓고 하는 것처럼 마음과 정성을 다해 잘 준비해서 인도해야 하겠다고 결심해 봅니다.

둘째로 강사님의 목회 연륜과 경험을 듣고 배우게 된 것이 좋았습니다. 개척 전부터 해서 개척 초기와 중기, 그리고 지금까지 어떻게 교회가 건강히 세워지고 있으며, 목사님과 사모님이 사역을 감당하셨는지 들으며 큰 감동이 되었습니다. 수년 동안 일주일 하루 금식을 하며 하나님 앞에 매달리신 모습, 믿음을 가지고 간절한 마음으로 기도하며 하나님이 하실 일을 기대하며 소망하시는 마음, 뉴욕 지역 이민자들의 바쁜 삶 가운데서도 말과 기도, 하나님이 우선되는 삶을 살아야 한다고 가르치시며 몸소 행하신 제자훈련과 여러 사역의 이야기를 들으며, 뉴저지에서 목회하는 40대 후반의 목사로서 큰 도전과 격려가 되었습니다. 하나님 말처럼, 그리고 이 목사님의 걸어왔던 목회처럼, 말과 기도에 전념하며 본이 되는 제자의 삶을 살며 성도들을 주님께로 인도하는 데 최선을 다해보고자 다짐해 봅니다.

마지막으로 작년에도 느꼈지만, 섬기시는 부목사님들과 간사님, 성도님들의 헌신을 통해 큰 사랑과 위로받고 갑니다. 그냥 지나칠 수 있는 다른 지역 목회자인 저와 타국의 목회자분들을 큰 비용과 노력과 사랑으로 섬기시는 모습을 보면서, ‘거저 받았으니 거저 주어라’ 말을 기억하게 되었습니다. 제가 섬기는 교회가 아직은 작고 부족한 것이 사실이지만 앞으로 더 힘써 사랑이 필요한 곳에 주신 사랑과 은혜를 흘려보내야겠다는 마음을 갖게 됩니다. 그뿐만 아니라 저와 아내, 우리 가정부터 이렇게 사랑을 나누는 삶, 복음을 전하는 삶을 살아야겠다고 다짐해 봅니다. 격려와 사랑, 그리고 도전과 깨달음 주신 대로 앞으로의 사역을 기대하며 감당하고자 합니다. 아내에게 먼저 1대 1로 제자 훈련을 시작해 보려고 합니다. 사람의 눈이 아닌 하나님 마음에 잘 들고 주님 마음에 합한 진실하고 정직한 목사로 살아가고자 결단해 봅니다.

섬기고 수고하신 이종식 목사님과 사모님, 모든 스탭과 성도님, 베이사이드장로교회에 진심으로 감사드리며 하나님의 은혜와 평강이 늘 함께하시길 축복하며 기도합니다. 이렇게 큰 위로와 힘을 주셔서 다시 한번 감사드리며 결단한 대로 살아보고자 최선을 다해 노력하겠습니다.

New York Light 6thPastoral Discipleship Training Seminar testimony of Pastor Ahn Hyun-Il:
As I wrapped up the summer ministry at my church, I looked forward to attending the Pastoral Discipleship Training Seminar in September. I had a good experience at the Mentoring Seminar last year when I learned about the ministry of Pastor Chong Shik Lee and the work God has been doing in the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside. This seminar started with a joyful reunion with the pastors I hadn't seen for a year. And from the very first session, it was full of grace. I was not quite ready to start discipleship training in my church. So, I attended every lecture during the seminar to learn from Pastor Lee and implement it in my church.
The most important thing I learned through this seminar is that the discipleship training leader must have passion for the Gospel and a willingness to obey Jesus' command to make disciples. I was greatly blessed and challenged by Pastor Lee. He has led discipleship training hundreds of times for over 30 years, but he said that he still approaches each class with a new heart. And God blesses him and the congregants every time. I realized that without conviction, commitment, and sacrifice, pastors cannot make disciples of Jesus. This made me re-examine myself and reflect on my ministry before I start discipleship training in my church. I resolved to prepare well and lead with my whole heart. And even if only a few people might attend the training, I would approach it as if I were leading thousands. I will devote myself to discipleship training with the heart of Christ and serve as a disciple.
It was also invaluable to learn from Pastor Lee through his many years in ministry. I was deeply inspired as he talked about how the church was built up to be a healthy church—from before the church was planted to present day. And it was a blessing to hear how Pastor Lee and his wife carried out their ministry throughout the past 35 years. He shared how he fasted once a week for years as he clung to the Lord in fervent prayer and anticipation of what the Lord would do. And he talked about the discipleship training classes and various ministries he led. Through all his ministry work, he motivated his congregants, who were mostly Korean immigrants in New York, to prioritize God through prayer and worship. This greatly challenged and encouraged me. Just like the Word of God shows and through Pastor Lee’s example, I resolve to commit myself to the Word and prayer. I want to strive to live as a disciple and do my utmost to lead my congregation to the Lord.
Finally, just as I experienced last year, through this seminar, I have been greatly loved and comforted by the dedication of the associate pastors, staff members, and congregants of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside. Their devotion for the Lord can be seen by the way they served the pastors who attended the seminar with love and generosity. Through their serving hands, I was reminded that Jesus said, "Freely you have received, freely give." Although my church may be still small and lacking in many ways, I desire to pour out to them the love and grace I have received here. Moreover, I resolve to have my family lead a life that shares His love and proclaims the Gospel. Going forward, I aspire to do my ministry grounded in the encouragement, love, insights and inspiration I have received at this seminar. First, I plan to start discipleship training one-on-one with my wife. I resolve to live as a sincere and honest pastor who is pleasing to the eyes of the Lord, not just to the eyes of men.
I sincerely thank Pastor Lee, his wife, all the staff members and the congregants of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside for the ways they served. And I pray for the grace and peace of God to be with them always. Thank you once again for being such great comfort and strength.
