“성경적인 교회를 꿈꾼다”

나는 한국 교회를 경험한 적이 없다.
어릴 때 이민 가서 예수님을 만나 이민 교회를 섬겨왔다.
그러는 동안 부흥하는 한국 교회를 동경해 왔다.
그리고 내가 목사가 되어 교회를 개척해 34년이란 세월이 흘렀다.

그렇게 목회를 하다 보니 한국 교회와 연결이 되었고 교류가 시작되었다.
한국에서 오는 목사님마다 우리 교회가 한국 교회와 똑같은 분위기라고 말하였다.
그런데 우리 교회를 평가하기를 1970년대의 한국 교회를 보는 듯하다고 했다.
나는 그것이 무슨 뜻인지 이해가 안 되었다.
나는 미국에서 목회를 하는데 왜 우리 교회가 한국 교회와 같은 분위기를 가졌는지 이해가 안 된 것이다.
그리고 1970년대의 교회의 모습이란 말이 더 이해가 안 되었다.

그러다가 한국 교회에서 설교를 하게 되자 느낀 것이 마치 고향에 온 것 같았다.
예배 스타일이 너무 같았기 때문이다.
그러나 한국 교회는 내가 동경하던 모습이 아니었다.
순수함이 아닌 이기적이고 권위적인 면이 컸다
그때 왜 우리 교회가 1970년대의 한국 교회를 닮았다는 말이 이해되었다.
신앙의 순수함과 자발적인 신앙의 모습을 우리 교회는 갖고 있었기 때문이다.

한국 땅에서 기도가 나왔다.
1970년대에 가졌던 신앙으로 한국 교회가 돌아가기를 …
뱀처럼 지혜로우나
비둘기처럼 순수해지기를
내가 본 한국 교회는 뱀처럼 지혜로웠으나
비둘기처럼 순수하지는 않았다.

우리 교회를 위한 바램이 생겼다.
세상을 향하여 지혜로우나 성경적인 순수함을 유지하기를…

“I dream of a Bible-centered church”

I’ve never experienced a Korean church because I did not attend a church in Korea.
I met Christ at a young age while attending a Korean immigrant church after I
emigrated from Korea.
But from far away, I admired the revival of Korean churches.
And I became a pastor. It’s been 34 years now since I founded the church.
As I continued to do ministry, I got connected to many churches in Korea.
All the pastors from Korea who visit our church say that our church is very similar to
Korean churches from the 1970s.
At first, I did not understand what this meant.
My ministry is in America. But how can our church be similar to churches in Korea?
And why the churches of the 1970s?
But when I recently preached at a church in Korea, I felt like I had come to my
hometown because the worship style was so similar to our church’s.
However, churches in Korea were different from what I had envisioned.
Rather than being pure, they were filled with selfish and egotistical.
That’s when I realized why the pastors said our church was like the 1970s churches in
Korea. It’s because our church still retains the purity of faith, and we voluntarily walk in
faith. I whispered a prayer in Korea.
May the churches of this land find the faith they had in the 1970s.
May they be wise as a serpent but pure as a dove.
The churches in Korea were wise as serpents but not pure like doves.
A new desire arose in my heart for our church.
May we be wise in this world but continue to maintain biblical purity.
