“독일에서 오신 선교사님의 간증”

1. 세미나 오기 전
유럽밀알은 지난 2007 년부터 한국 선교 단체가 독일 장애인을 대상으로 선교할 수 있는 가능성을 탐색하며 사역에 집중해 왔다. 가능성과 방법들에 대한 확신 속에서 사역을 구체화하던 중, 우리는 코로나라는 예상치 못한 도전에 직면했다.

현재 독일 사회는 교회, 선교단체, 복지시설, 공동체 할 것 없이 모두 코로나로 인해 무너진 부분들을 다시 일으키는 과정에서 진통을 겪고 있는 상황이다. 내가 현장에서 섬기고 있는 독일밀알 역시 예외가 아니다. 내가 속한 독일 교회도 마찬가지다. 특히 밀알은 코로나 이후 새로운 세대와 새로운 방식으로 사역을 재개해야 하는 상황이었지만, 어떻게 시작해야 할지 막막하기만 했다. 단순히 재정 문제가 아니라, "새로운 세대(예, MZ 세대)와 어떻게 소통하고, 어떻게 밀알을 다시 세울 것인가?"가 가장 큰 고민이었다.

지난 1 년 동안 이 문제를 놓고 집중적으로 기도하며 방법을 모색하고 있었다. 또한 교회 개척 사역의 실패로 잠시 중단하고 오랫동안 기도만 해 왔던 것이 밀알 사역과 연결될 수 있을지, 아님 분리된 사역일지, 연결될 수 있다면 어떻게 연결될 수 있을지, 연결 될 수 없다면 어떻게 해야 할지 고민하는 중이었다.

2. 어떻게 소개받았나?
이런 상황에서 마침 송우식 목사님을 통해 이 세미나를 소개받았다. 기도하며 길을 찾고 있던 터라 무조건 신청해야겠단 생각이 들어 망설임 없이 신청하게 되었다.

3. 어떤 세미나라고 생각하는가?
새로운 시작이 절실한 상황에서 이번 세미나는 기존에 갖고 있던 생각들을 더욱 견고하게 하면서도 새로운 도전을 심어준 시간이었다. 제자훈련, 순모임, 바나바 사역 등 전도, 정착, 양육을 위한 프로그램들이 신선한 방향성을 제시해 주었다.

북부 독일 교회의 부흥을 위해서, 장애인 선교를 통해 독일 교회를 회복하기 위해서, 이 프로그램들을 어떻게 적용할 수 있을지 기도하며 집중해서 세미나에 참여했다. 결국, 말씀이 우리 안에서 살아 움직이게 하는 프로그램이라는 확신이 들었다. 인간이 뭔가를 하는 것 같지만, 결국 하나님의 형상으로 지어진 존재가 하나님과 맞닿을 때 열매가 맺히는 사역이라는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 하나님 안에서 기쁨을 누리며 그것 자체가 하나님의 영광을 선포하는 사역이 되겠단 생각이 들었다. 이런 게 바로 내가 찾고 있던 모델이었다.

4. 세미나를 참석한 후의 나?

밀알 모임에 나오는 장애인들에게 복음을 전하고, 이들이 집이나 작업장, 시설에서 선교적인 삶을 살도록 훈련하는 방법이 막막했는데, 이번 세미나를 통해 그 해답을 얻게 되었다. 또한, 준비되지 않은 자원봉사자들을 어떻게 훈련해야 할지 고민이 많았었다. 이미 교회에서 훈련된 자원들을 기다리고 있기에는 속수무책이란 생각이 들었다. 이제는 밀알 안에서 장애인과 비장애인 모두를 훈련하여, 각자의 자리에서 복음을 살아내도록 세울 수 있겠다는 확신이 생겼다. 비장애인들을 훈련시켜서 이들이 본 교회를 잘 섬기면, 밀알이 교회를 돕는 사역으로 자연스럽게 연결될 수 있겠다는 확신도 들었다.

밀알은 선교하는 공동체에서 선교적 공동체로 그리고 이원론적 선교가 아닌 총체적 선교로 나아갈 수 있겠다. 또한 단순히 선교단체가 교회에서 자원을 동원하는 걸 넘어서 참여하는 수준으로 자연스럽게 이어지게 하면서 성과 중심이 아닌 협력 차원으로 새로운 패러다임을 만들어 나갈 수 있겠단 생각이 들었다. 이 부분은 선교단체를 섬기면서 10 년 이상 고민해 온 내용인데 오랫동안 밀린 과제를 풀 수 있을 것 같은 마음에 살짝 속이 후련하다.

l 교회개척 - 토요학교: 독일 교회의 새로운 가능성
이번 세미나를 통해 한 가지 더 확신하게 된 것이 있다. 토요학교는 독일 교회를 살릴 수 있는 선교적 대안이 될 수 있을 것 같다. 독일의 난민 정책은 법적, 행정적, 복지적인 차원에서만 접근하는 경우가 많고, 교회조차도 난민들을 단순히 ‘돕는 대상’으로 보는 경우가 많다. 하지만 난민들의 진짜 필요는 단순한 물질적 지원이 아니라, 삶의 방향성과 희망, 그리고 정서적 안정이다. 장애인 문제와 다르지 않은 것이다.
그런 면에서 토요학교(Samstagsschule) 모델은 매우 실질적이면서도 선교적인 접근 방식이 될 수 있겠다.

• 기초 독일어 교육을 통해 아이들이 독일 사회에 적응할 수 있도록 돕는다.
• 동시에 성경 이야기를 들려주어 자연스럽게 복음을 접하게 한다.
• 부모들도 아이들을 통해 교회와 연결될 가능성이 높아진다.
• 무엇보다, 정서적 안정은 사회 문제 해결과 통합에 기여할 수 있다.
• 단순히 난민 어린이들뿐만 아니라 저소득층 아이들도 함께 고려할 수 있겠다.

결국, 토요학교는 단순한 교육 프로그램이 아니라 독일 교회의 부흥을 위한 강력한 선교적 다리가 될 수 있겠다. 하나님께서 이 사역을 통해 독일 교회를 새롭게 하실 것을 믿고 구체적인 기도로 준비해야겠단 마음이 들었다.

이번 세미나를 통해 밀알이나 교회 개척이나 그 길을 열어가실 것을 기대한다. 하나님께서 반드시 길을 열어주실 것이다! 할렐루야!

UK Pastoral Mentoring Seminar testimony by a missionary who serves in Germany:

Since 2007, the ministry that I am involved in, Milal Europe, has focused on exploring the possibility for Korean missionary organizations to minister to the people with disabilities in Germany. The direction of the ministry was finally taking shape when we were faced with the unexpected challenges of COVID-19. Even now, every part of Germany—including churches, missionary organizations, welfare institutions, and communities—is still in the process of painstakingly rebuilding what was destroyed by the pandemic. The Germany ministry of Milal, which I lead, and the church I serve are no exceptions.

The organization Milal needed new methods to reach the next generation. But it was unclear how to catalyze the changes. The main concern was not so much about finances but how to reach the next generation, the millennials and Gen z, and rebuild Milal. The past year, we prayed about this issue and searched for ways to move forward. I also wondered if the ministry of Milal could somehow be integrated to planting a new church, which had been on hold because of past failed attempts. And if that’s the case, I did not know how or what to do to make that happen.
As I was going through this dilemma, I heard about the pastoral mentoring seminar through Pastor Song Woo Shik. Without any hesitation, I registered to attend because I was praying and searching for a new path.

I desperately needed a fresh start. And so, this seminar solidified my convictions and inspired me to challenge myself to do new things. Ministry opportunities like discipleship training, small group gatherings, and the Barnabas fellowship offered me fresh direction for evangelism, establishment, and spiritual growth. Throughout the seminar, I actively thought how I could apply everything I was learning to bring about a revival in the Northern German churches and reach the people with disabilities. Ultimately, I became convinced that the programs that were presented at the seminar enable people to actively experience the Word. It may seem like we are doing the work, but I came to realize that true fruit is borne when we who are made in the image of God come face to face with God Himself. I realized that experiencing joy in the Lord is in itself a proclamation of God’s glory. This is exactly the kind of ministry model I had been searching for.

For a long time, I did not really know how to share the gospel with the people with disabilities who were involved in Milal. I was unsure how I could train them to live by faith in their invidiaul lives. But I found the answers through this seminar. Before, I also did not know how to train volunteers. I felt helpless and unproductive waiting for already-trained people to the church to volunteer. But now, I am confident that we can train both those with and without disabilities who are involved in Milal so that they could live out the gospel wherever they go. I also realized that Milal can nautrally serve the local church if I train non-disabled people to serve their home churches faithfully. I now see that Milal can transition to become a missional community, no longer dualistic but holistic ministry. Moreover, I realized that rather than being a missionary organization that merely draws resources from churches, Milal can organically partner with churches—not focusing on results but on collaboration—ushering in a new paradigm. This is something I’ve wrestled with for over ten years while serving in mission organizations. But now that I feel like we can finally start addressing that long-unresolved burden, it brings me a sense of relief.

As for church planting, I think Saturday School could be a new possibility for the German churches. Through the mentoring seminar, I became convinced that Saturday School could become a powerful alternate missionary tool that can revive the German churches. Germany’s refugee policy is often approached mainly from legal, administrative, and welfare perspectives. Even many churches tend to view refugees merely as “recipients of help”. However, the true needs of refugees are not just material support. They also need purpose, hope, and emotional stability, which is not so different from the issues faced by people with disabilities. In light of this, the Samstagsschule (Saturday School) model could provide a very practical and mission-oriented approach:

• Basic German language instruction helps children adapt to German society.
• At the same time, they naturally encounter the gospel through Bible stories.
• Parents are more likely to connect with the church through their children.
• Most importantly, emotional stability contributes to resolving broader social issues and promoting integration.
• The program could also include not only refugee children but also those from lower-income families.

Ultimately, I learned that Saturday School is more than just an educational program. It could become a powerful missional tool for the revival of the German churches. I am strongly convicted to prepare for this ministry in prayer. And I believe that God will use it to renew the German churches.

Through this seminar, I was filled with hope that God will open the way, whether it be through Milal or church planting. God will surely make a way! Hallelujah!
