“스코틀랜드에서 목회하는 목사님의 간증”

제3회 목회자 멘토링 세미나에 참석하게 된 것이 하나님의 은혜이고 인도하심인 줄 믿습니다. 저는 스코틀랜드에서 현지인 목회 시작을 앞두고 목사이신 아버지로부터 본 세미나 참석을 적극 추천 받았습니다. 베이사이드장로교회와 이종식 목사님을 잘 알고 계시는 한 뉴욕의 목사님께서 세미나가 앞으로 선교와 목회를 앞두고 있는 저에게 꼭 필요하다는 말씀을 듣고 추천하신 것입니다. 강한 추천으로 인해 저는 참석을 결정하였고 런던으로 오게 되었습니다. 세미나를 참석하기 전에 이미 여러 선교와 목회 계획을 갖고 있었습니다. 하지만 세미나 참석 후에 거의 모든 저의 목회계획이 바뀌었습니다.

가장 먼저 바뀐 부분은 부끄러운 고백이지만 기도를 해야겠다는 결단입니다. 물론 기도는 당연히 해야 하는 일이고 또 분명 기도를 했을 것입니다. 하지만 세미나 참석 이후 기도에 대한 자세와 우선순위가 완전하게 바뀌었습니다. 정확하게 어떻게 기도하겠다는 약속을 하나님께 드리지는 않았지만 분명한 것은 모든 사역 전에 기도할 것이며 사역 중에 기도할 것이고 사역 후에도 기도 할 것입니다. 기도보다 우선 시 되는 그 어떤 방법이 있어서는 안 된다는 사실을 깨달았고 또 기도 할 것입니다. 너무나 당연하고 본질적이고 성경말씀 그대로인 바로 그 기도를 할 것입니다. 기도중심의 목회계획뿐 아니라 제자 훈련을 목회와 선교에 적극 도입, 적용 하기로 결심했습니다. 그 이유는 명확합니다. 바로 하나님의 아들이시고 곧 하나님 되시는 예수님께서 친히 행하셨고 우리에게 행하라 명하신 것이기 때문입니다.

제자 훈련 없는 목회는 예수님을 신뢰하지 않는 것과 동일하며 성경말씀을 따르지 않는 것과 동일하다는 사실을 깊이 깨달았습니다. 제자 훈련은 곧 올바른 복음 전파하는 것이며 그리스도의 유언이자 약속이자 명령인 모든 민족을 제자 삼는 성경적이고 유일한 방법이라는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 예수님의 목회 방식을 우리가 따라야 하는 것은 분명한 것이며 그대로 따라 할 수는 없지만 그래도 가장 근접하게 그 방식을 따를 수 있는 것이 바로 제자 훈련이고 셀모임이라는 사실을 성경에 근거하여 깨달았습니다.

이번 세미나를 통해서 제자 훈련에 대해 눈을 뜨게 되었고 앞으로 지속적으로 연구하며 목회에 적극 적용할 기회를 얻게 된 것이 하나님께서 제게 주신 큰 선물입니다. 뿐만 아니라 이종식 목사님을 통해 참 목자상에 대해 다시 한번 깨닫고 목사다운 목사가 되고자 하는 결단을 하게 된 것이 하나님께서 제게 베풀어 주신 은혜입니다. 교회다운 교회를 세우는 바른 목회자가 되고자 하는 결단을 허락하신 하나님께 큰 감사를 드리며 영광을 돌립니다.

끝으로 자격없고 한없이 비천한 종을 큰 사랑으로 섬겨주신 베이사이드장로교회와 이종식 목사님과 사모님 그리고 선교팀에게 큰 감사를 드립니다. 베풀어 주신 큰 사랑과 은혜가 더욱 값지고 하나님께 더욱 큰 영광이 되도록 이번 세미나를 통해 받은 은혜와 결단을 지키며 기도하겠습니다.
다시 한번 하나님께 큰 영광을 돌리며 베이사이드장로교회의 헌신과 섬김 그리고 사랑에 큰 감사를 드립니다.

 

Weekly Devotional with Pastor Chong Shik Lee

UK Pastoral Mentoring Seminar testimony by a Pastor who serves in Scotland:

I believe that it was God’s grace and guidance that allowed me to attend the second Pastoral Mentoring Seminar. Right when I was about to start a new local ministry in Scotland, I learned about the seminar through my father, who is also a pastor. He highly recommended that I attend the seminar. And a pastor in New York, who is well-acquainted with Pastor Chong Shik Lee and his church, also told me that this seminar would be essential for me as I prepare for future missions and pastoral work. Due to these great recommendations, I decided to attend the seminar.
Before attending the seminar, I had made many plans for missions and my ministry. However, after the seminar, nearly all my pastoral plans changed. I am embarrassed to confess, but the first thing that changed is the decision to pray. Of course, I knew that prayer is important. And I’m sure that I prayed. But after attending the seminar, my attitude toward prayer changed. It became a priority to me. Although I did not promise God how I would pray, I vowed that I would pray before, during, and after I do any ministry work. I realized that nothing should take precedence over prayer. And so, I will pray, which is the most basic foundational truth of the Bible.

In addition to a prayer-centered ministry, I also decided to incorporate discipleship training into my ministry and mission work. The reason is clear. It’s because Jesus Himself, the Son of God who is God Himself, did this and commanded us to do the same. Through the seminar, I learned that ministry without discipleship training is essentially the same thing as not trusting Jesus and not following the Word. I came to understand that discipleship training is the right way to spread the gospel, and that it is the only biblical way to fulfill Christ’s final word, His promise, and His command—to make disciples of all nations.

It is clear that we must follow Jesus’ model of ministry. While we cannot follow it perfectly, I learned through the Word that the best way to emulate His model is to do discipleship training and have cell groups. The seminar opened my eyes to the importance of discipleship training. And God has given me a great gift, which is the opportunity to further my studies for discipleship training and actively apply it to my ministry. Not only that, but I was also reminded by Pastor Lee what it truly means to be a shepherd. After the seminar, by the grace of God, I renewed my commitment to become a pastor who truly reflects that calling.

I give all thanks and glory to God for moving my heart to make the decision to become the kind of pastor who builds a true, Christ-centered church. Also, I am grateful to Pastor Lee and his wife, the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside, and the mission team for serving an undeserving, unworthy pastor like me with such great love. May the love and grace you poured out to us pastors be multiplied to you. And I pray that I will remember the grace I received and promises I made to God throughout this seminar so that I may glorify God all the more. Once again, I give God all the glory. And I am so grateful to the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside for the sacrifice and love that was bestowed on me and the pastors.
