“런던에서 목회하시는 목사님의 간증”

1. 21년 전, 한국에서 신대원을 졸업하자마자 이곳 런던에 신학공부를 계속하기 위해 왔습니다. 공부 중간쯤, 챨스 스펄젼 목사님이 사역하셨던 metropolitan Tabernacle에서 사역할 수 있는 기회가 있어 공부를 잠시 멈추고 영국교회의 사역현장을 직접 배울 수 있는 기회를 가지게 되었습니다. 영국 교회에서 사역하는 동안 하나님께서 런던에서 개척에 대한 마음을 주셨고, 이후 4-5년 동안 개척에 대한 마음을 확인하는 과정을 거쳐 2018년 런던시내에서 교회를 개척하게 되었습니다. 개척 후 코로나 전까지는 교회가 조금씩 안정이 되어갔지만 코로나로 인해 모든 청년들이 한국으로 돌아가고 여러 가정들도 한국과 세계 각처로 떠나게 되었습니다. 결국 코로나 전과 같이 다시 개척하는 것과 동일한 상황이 되었습니다. 하지만, 이후부터는 계획하고 뜻하는 대로 교회가 잘 성장하지 않고 사역은 큰 변함없이 정체되는 시기를 경험하게 되었습니다. 오히려 교회의 형편은 나아지지 않고 자꾸 힘들어 가기만 했습니다. 이렇게 교회가 정체되어 있는 상황에서 어떻게 돌파구를 찾아야 할지를 많이 고민했지만 뚜렷한 해결책을 찾지 못했습니다. 또 이런 상황을 어떻게 대체해야 할지에 대한 목회에 대한 조언도 필요했지만 그런 도움을 받을 수 있는 곳은 전혀 없었습니다. 오로지 홀로 큰 짐을 매고 끙끙거리며 고민하고 있었습니다.

2. 이런 상황에서 이번 세미나를 소개받게 되었습니다. 소개받기를, 무엇보다 강사 목사님께서 개척 후 지금까지 사역해 오신 그 과정들과 고민들, 무엇보다 목사님께서 어떻게 목회를 해오셨는지를 소개해 주신다고 하셨기에 저에게는 너무 필요한 것들이었습니다. 그래서 고민하지도 않고 참석을 결정하였습니다.

3. 이번 세미나는 제가 지금까지 알고 있었던 제자 훈련과는 전혀 다른 새로운 제자 훈련을 알려주었습니다. 성도들이 말씀을 충분히 이해하고 공감할 수 있도록 설명할 뿐만 아니라, 이것들을 성도들의 삶과 직접 연결될 수 있도록, 적용할 수 있도록 하는 제자 훈련이었습니다. 또 제자 훈련을 통해 성도들의 영적인 필요를 채우고 말씀의 은혜를 경험하게 하는 강력한 훈련 도구임을 알게 되었습니다.
또, 제자훈련에 대한 강의뿐만 아니라 목사님께서 오직 말씀대로 믿고 기도함으로 하나님의 역사하심을 직접, 실제적으로 경험하셨다는 간증들이 참으로 큰 도전이 되었습니다. 기적을 믿지만 그 기적이 나에게 일어나도록 믿지 못했고 기도하지 못한 연약한 나 자신의 모습을 발견하게 되었습니다.

4. 이제 어떻게 목회를 해야 할지 사역의 방향과 방법을 동시에 배우게 된 좋은 시간이었습니다. 목사님의 강의가 어떻게 목회를 해야 할지 몰라 고민하는 후배들에게 너무나 좋은 가이드가 되었습니다. 이제는 듣고 배웠던 것을 믿음으로 실천하는 것만 남은 것 같습니다. 하나님께서 강사 목사님을 통해 이렇게 너무나 좋은 기회를 주셔서 감사할 뿐입니다.

UK Pastoral Mentoring Seminar testimony by a Pastor who serves in London:

Twenty-one years ago, right after graduating from seminary in Korea, I came to London to continue my theological studies. While I was still in seminary, I had the opportunity to serve at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, the church Pastor Charles Spurgeon once ministered. During my time there, I gained a deeper insight into what ministry is like in the UK. It is then that God placed a burden on my heart to plant a church in London. After 4-5 years in 2018, when my calling was established, I planted a church in central London. The church gradually grew more stable. But with the arrival of COVID-19, all the young adults returned to Korea. And many families also left. Because of this, the church struggled like the time when it was first founded. Since then, the church did not grow, and the ministry became stagnant. Instead of improving, it became increasingly difficult to do ministry. I wrestled with how to make the situation better, but I could not think of any clear solution. I needed pastoral advice on how to navigate the struggles I was facing in my ministry, but there was no one I could turn to for help. I felt like I was left to carry the heavy burden alone. It is then that I heard about the pastoral mentoring seminar. Above all else, the seminar piqued my interest when I heard that the speaker would be sharing his experience of planting a church, his pastoral journey of leading that church until present day, and the challenges he had faced throughout the years. And so, without hesitation, I decided to attend the seminar.

At the seminar, Pastor Lee introduced a discipleship training program that was completely different from what I had known. I learned that discipleship training not only helps congregants understand and accept the Word, but it also enables them to apply the Word of God to their lives. I realized that this is a powerful tool that can help congregants of the church grow spiritually and allow them to experience the grace of God's Word. Pastor Lee also shared numerous testimonies of how he directly experienced God’s amazing works through faith in the Word of God and prayer. This greatly challenged and inspired me. I realized that even though I believed in miracles, I didn’t believe that miracles could happen to me. And I also recognized that I was truly a weak vessel who did not pray.

Through the seminar, I learned the direction in which I should lead my church and how I need to do ministry. Pastor Lee’s lectures were a wonderful guide for pastors like me who are struggling and unsure of how to minister effectively. Now, it is up to me to put it all to practice with faith. I am infinitely grateful that God gave me such a great opportunity to learn through Pastor Lee.
