"부르심의 자리에서 다시 믿음으로”

한국에서 교회를 개척하여 담임목회를 하던 경험은 지금의 선교 사역에 귀중한 밑거름이 되고 있습니다. 영국 선교사로 부름 받은 지 어느덧 5년. 첫 4년간은 거리전도와 순회설교에 집중했지만 목회 경험을 통해 깨달은 체계적인 양육과 훈련의 중요성을 떠올리며 늘 아쉬움이 있었습니다. 그러던 중 하나님의 인도하심으로 작년부터는 디아스포라 선교를 지향하는 한인교회와 동역하게 되었습니다. 다양한 인종과 문화가 공존하는 대도시 런던에서, 보다 실제적이고 효과적인 목양과 훈련 방안을 고민하던 차에 신대원 선배인 송우석 목사님을 통해 이번 세미나를 알게 되어 참석을 결심하게 되었습니다.

배움의 자리에는 늘 힘써 참석하려 마음 써 왔기에 일정을 확인하자마자 참석을 결정했습니다, 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 독일에서 사역하는 동기 선교사로부터 뜻 깊은 연락을 받았습니다. 그는 작년 가을 뉴욕에서 열린 같은 세미나에 참석했었는데 그것이 자신의 사역 방향을 완전히 새롭게 하는 전환점이 되었다며 저에게 강력히 추천했습니다. 이미 신청한 상태였지만 그의 진심 어린 추천은 세미나에 대한 기대를 한층 높여주었고 같은 교회에서 동역하는 두 명의 동료 사역자들에게도 권하여 그들과 함께 참석하게 되었습니다.

세미나 첫날 개회예배는 저의 목회 여정을 깊이 돌아보게 하는 강력한 도전의 시간이었습니다. 이종식 목사님께서는 사역의 방법론이나 기술을 논하기에 앞서 목회자로서의 부르심에 대한 근본적인 확신을 강조하셨습니다. 많은 목회자들이 하나님의 부르심에 대한 확신이 없기 때문에 그 빈자리를 학위나 다른 것들로 채우려 한다는 말씀이 가슴 깊이 와 닿았습니다. 특히 제자훈련의 실제를 직접 체험하는 시간을 통해 골방에서 드리는 은밀한 기도의 참된 의미를 새롭게 발견한 것은 큰 은혜였습니다. 그동안 저는 전도와 설교, 새벽기도와 말씀 묵상으로 하나님과 충분히 깊은 교제를 나누고 있다고 생각했습니다 그러나 정작 다른 목적 없이 순수하게 하나님을 사랑하는 마음으로 드리는 일대일 교제의 시간이 부족했다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 이는 단순한 깨달음을 넘어 제게 주신 하나님의 특별한 초대였습니다.

이번 세미나를 통해 하나님께서는 저를 향하신 놀라운 계획을 다시 한 번 확인시켜 주셨습니다. 뉴욕 베이사이드장로교회를 통해 이루신 하나님의 놀라운 역사가 이곳 런던에서도 이루어질 것 이라는 기대와 소망이 커졌습니다. 풍성한 식사와 간식, 편안한 숙소를 세심하게 준비해 주시고 무엇보다 30여 년의 귀중한 목회 경험과 지혜를 아낌없이 나누어 주신 이종식 목사님께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 또한 세미나 진행을 위해 헌신적으로 섬겨주신 베이사이드장로교회의 모든 스텝 분들과 이 세미나를 위해 기도와 물질로 후원해주신 성도님들께도 진심으로 감사드립니다.

독일, 뉴욕, 프랑스, 스코틀랜드, 웨일스, 잉글랜드 등 각지에서 모인 목회자들과의 교제 또한 특별한 은혜였습니다. 각자의 사역 현장에서 맞닥뜨린 어려움과 도전 그리고 그 가운데 경험한 하나님의 신실하심을 나누며 서로에게 위로와 격려가 되었습니다. 이 모든 것을 준비하시고 허락하신 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다. 후속 세미나가 열린다면 기꺼이 참석하고 싶고 주변의 동역자들에게도 적극 추천하고 싶은 귀한 시간이었습니다.

UK Pastoral Mentoring Seminar testimony by a Pastor who serves in London:

“Remembering my calling as I rise up again in faith”

My experience of pioneering a church and serving as a senior pastor in Korea has become a valuable foundation for my current missionary work. It has already been five years since I was called to be a missionary in the UK. During the first four years, I focused on street evangelism and itinerant preaching. But through my pastoral experience, I came to crave systematic nurturing and training as I realized the importance of this. Through God's guidance, last year I started working with a Korean church that focuses on diaspora mission work. In London, a large city where various races and cultures coexist, I have been contemplating more practical and effective ways of pastoring and training. It was during this time that I learned about the pastoral mentoring seminar through a colleague, Pastor Song Woo-seok and decided to attend.

Because I always want to learn, I made the decision to attend the seminar as soon as I found out the schedule. Shortly after, a fellow missionary pastor who serves in Germany contacted me. He attended the pastoral mentoring seminar last fall in New York. He said that it was a turning point in his life. Through the seminar, the entire trajectory of his ministry was transformed. I had already registered to attend the seminar, but his heartfelt recommendation gave me a greater expectation for the seminar. With this kind of heart, I encouraged two colleagues from my church to attend as well.

The opening worship service on the first day of the seminar was a powerful time that deeply challenged me to reflect on my pastoral journey. Pastor Chong Shik Lee emphasized the conviction of the calling we received when we first became a pastor before he discussed ministry methods or techniques. He shared that many pastors, lack the assurance of God's calling. And so, they try to fill that void with academic accolades or other accomplishments. This deeply resonated with me. Furthermore, as Pastor Lee demonstrated the practicality of discipleship training, I discovered the true meaning of prayer. Until then, I thought I was having a deep communion with God through evangelism, preaching, early morning prayers, and meditation on the Word. However, I realized that I failed to have one-on-one fellowship with God that was offered purely out of love for Him. I believe that this realization was not simply an insight I gained but a special invitation from the Lord Himself.

Through this seminar, God once again confirmed His amazing plan for me. I was filled with hope and anticipation that the miraculous work the Lord has done in the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside will also be realized here in London. I am deeply grateful to Pastor Chong Shik Lee, who not only generously provided us with meals, snacks, and comfortable accommodations, but also shared invaluable wisdom that he had gained from firsthand experience throughout his 34years of ministry. I also give my sincerest thanks to all the congregants of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Bayside who served the seminar through prayer and selfless contributions.

It was also a wonderful privilege to have fellowship with pastors from different regions like Germany, New York, France, Scotland, Wales, and England. As we shared the various challenges we face in our ministries and our experiences of God’s faithfulness, we were able to comfort and encourage one another. I give glory to God, who prepared and allowed all this to happen through the seminar. If a follow-up seminar is held, I will gladly attend. And I highly recommend this seminar to pastors who have not yet attended. It was truly a precious experience.
