“런던에서 목회하는 목사님의 간증”

1. 세미나에 오기 전 생각은?
저는 목회자 세미나를 좋아하는 사람은 아닙니다. 저도 목사이지만 목사님들이 많이 모인 곳은 솔직히 가지 않습니다. 그리고 큰 재정을 들여 영국까지 와서 목회자 세미나를 왜 여는 것인지 목적도 알 수 없었기에 처음에는 순수하게 받아들이지 못했습니다. 이런 이유로 이번 세미나를 처음 소개받았을 때 부정적이었습니다. (지금 생각하면 참으로 부끄럽고 죄송한 마음입니다.)

2. 어떻게 오게 되었는지?
불참하겠다는 답변을 드리려 할 무렵, 권종현 목사님에게 문자를 받았습니다. 목회가 무엇인지 몰라 이번 세미나를 신청했다는 메시지였습니다. 그래서 ‘부정적으로만 보지 말자’ 생각을 바꾸고, 내게 정말 필요한 세미나인지에 관하여 정보를 찾아봤습니다. 유튜브에 이종식 목사님에 대해 검색하고 짧게 신청했으며, 구글을 통해 이전에 세미나를 경험한 이들의 피드백을 조사했습니다. 조사를 통해 이종식 목사님은 목회 경험이 부족한 목회자에게 실질적인 도움이 되는 조언을 이해하기 쉽게 알려주는 분임을 알게 되었습니다.

현재 섬기는 교회에 담임으로 부임하기 전까지는 일만 했지, 실제 목양에 대한 경험이 생경하였습니다. 그래서 부임하여 6년간 만족한 선택보다는 후회되는 선택과 순간들이 많았습니다. 이런 실기(失機)가 쌓이니 새로운 일을 할 열정이 생기지 않아 괴로웠는데, 이번 세미나가 제게는 저 자신과 교회 목회를 제대로 Reset 할 준비를 배우고 깨달을 기회가 될 것 같아서 신청 하였습니다.

3. 세미나 어떻게 생각하는가?
강사 이종식 목사님께서 젊은 날부터 목회를 배우기 위해 여러 세미나에 참석하여 배웠다는 말 씀을 들으며 얼마나 저 자신이 편협하고 교만했는지를 반성했습니다. 개척부터 지금까지 목회 현장에서 얻은 목회와 목양 비결을 알려주시며 무엇부터 알아야 하고 준비해야 하는지 순서까지 정해주셔서 생각을 정리하는데 도움이 되었습니다. 담임이 되기 전이라면 이런 멘토링의 가치를 몰랐을 것 같습니다. 그런데 이번 세미나를 듣고 목회 전반적인 윤곽을 그려볼 수 있게 되었습니다. 제가 고민하면서 풀지 못했던 어쩌면 사소하다고 할 수 있는 요소들까지 설명을 해주셔서 고마웠습니다.

4. 세미나를 출석한 후의 나?
이번에 이종식 목사님께서 젊은 목사들에게 물고기를 먹기 편하게 요리해서 준 듯 보이지만, 저는 목사님이 물고기 잡는 법과 장비를 소개해 주셨다고 생각합니다.

그래서
1) 목회 매뉴얼을 작성하겠습니다.
목사님이 주신 자료와 수업 내용을 정리하여 저만의 목회 매뉴얼을 만들어 볼 생각입니다. 청빙 당시 작성한 목회 계획안을 가지고 교회 소개와 목회 철학을 다시 쓰겠습니다.

2) 무엇을 하든지 금식과 기도로 준비하겠습니다.
놓치고 있던 중요한 기본을 깨달았습니다. “금식과 기도로 준비할 것!” 지금까지 전문가처럼 준비하고 일해야 멋진 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 생각으로 머리가 가득했습니다. 그러다 보니 불필요한 힘이 잔뜩 들어가고 시간은 미뤄졌다고 생각합니다. 너무 잘하려고 하지 말고 금식과 기도로 준비하고, 성도들에게도 기도를 요청하여 함께 기도하는 분위기를 만들어 가겠습니다.

3) 제자 훈련을 시작하겠습니다.
성도들에게 한 약속이라 올해는 시작하려 했습니다. 제자 훈련의 필요성은 알지만, 저 자신이 동기부여가 강하지 못했습니다. 그래서 미친 듯 시작하고 꾸준히 해 나갈 동력이 부족했습니다.
간증문을 쓰며 제자 훈련의 필요성을 생각해 보면서 이렇게 결론을 내렸습니다.
“만일 내가 주님의 부름을 받는다면, 무엇을 남기고 주께 갈까?”
“사랑하는 자녀들과 아내 그리고 부모님
교회. 교회. 교회…. 제가 남겨야 할 것은 예수님의 제자들입니다.”
목회자가 바뀔 때마다 담임 목사의 사람을 만들기 위한 제자 훈련이 아닌, 성경이 말하는 예수 님의 제자를 세우는 것이 진짜 목회이며 목양임을 명심하겠습니다. 이런 목회 철학이 일만 하던 제게는 아직 익숙하지 않습니다. 익숙하지 않아도 익숙하고 당연하여 고민하지 않아도 될 만큼 제자 만들기에 힘쓰는 목회자가 되도록 기도 부탁드립니다.

UK Pastoral Mentoring Seminar testimony by a Pastor who serves a church in London:

1. Before attending the seminar
I normally do not enjoy attending pastoral seminars. Although I am a pastor, I usually try to avoid large pastoral gatherings. And at first, I could not understand why someone would spend so much and come all the way to the UK to hold a pastoral mentoring seminar. So, I was pessimistic when I first heard about the seminar. In hindsight, I feel so ashamed and apologetic for my initial outlook about the seminar.

2. How I came to attend the seminar
Just as I was about to respond that I would not be attending, I received a message from Pastor Jonghyun Kwon. He said that he applied for the seminar because he did not know what it truly meant to be a pastor. His response made me revaluate my decision. And I looked more into the seminar and the church that was sponsoring the seminar. I found Pastor Chong Shik Lee on YouTube and listened to his messages. And I learned more about the seminar on google by reading through the feedback of pastors who attended previous seminars. Through the research, I learned that Pastor Lee offers practical advice that is easy to understand and implement to pastors who are less experienced. Before I was brought to my current church to be the senior pastor, I only worked. I had no real ministry experience in shepherding. So, rather than feeling satisfied with my decision of becoming the senior pastor of a church, I was regretful about many of the decisions I made in the past 6 years. Assuch unrealized opportunities accumulated, I became troubled because I no longer had any desire to do something new. So, I decided to attend the seminar because I realized it could be the perfect chance for me to learn and realize how to reset myself and my ministry.

3. My thoughts about the seminar
When Pastor Lee mentioned that he attended various seminars from a young age to learn more about how to do ministry, I repented for my narrow-mindedness and arrogance. And I appreciated how he shared his know-hows about ministry and organized what needs to be done to do pastoral work. I do not think I would have valued these insights as much if I were not a senior pastor of a church. But after attending this seminar, I was able to outline the overall picture of my ministry. And I was truly grateful that Pastor Lee explained everything I need to know about doing ministry, including all the trivial problems I struggled to solve on my own.

4. After the seminar
It might seem like Pastor lee caught a fish and cooked it in a way that is easily digestible for young pastors. But in reality, he taught us how to catch our own fish and introduced us to all the tools we would need.
Therefore, I decided to do the following:
a) I will write a manual for my ministry.
As I reorganize and review the notes from the seminar, I want to make a manual tailored to my ministry. I will rewrite the philosophy of my church and include the plans I had made at the time of my ordination.
b) I will prepare everything with prayer and fasting.
I realized a fundamental truth that I had forgotten—I must prepare with fasting and prayer. Because I thought that I had to be like an expert in order to see results, I needlessly spent too much energy and time. Rather than trying to do something perfectly, I will spend more time in prayer and fasting. I will also motivate my congregation to pray with me.
c) I will start doing discipleship training at my church.
Because I already made a promise with my congregation, I was going to start a discipleship training program this year. I knew the importance of it, but I think I lacked motivation to do it. So, I did not have the drive to commence it and persevere through it. As I ponder about the necessity of discipleship training, I came to the following conclusion. If God calls me home, what would I leave behind in this world when go to the Lord? I leave behind my beloved wife, children, parents, and my church. But what I must leave behind are disciples of Christ. I will remember that discipleship training is not to make supporters of the ministry or the pastor himself. The purpose of discipleship training is to raise up true disciples of Christ as described in the Bible. This philosophy of ministry is foreign to me, for I am used to just going through the motion and do the required work. Even so, please pray that I will be a pastor who strives to make disciples and that this will become second nature to me.
