“왜 성도에게 고난이 오는 것일까?”

페밀리 라디오를 듣는데 한 목사님이 사도바울의 고난에 관해 이야기했다.
그는 수 없는 고난을 겪었다.
몸엔 질병이 있었고
수많은 매를 맞았고 강의 위협과 바다의 위협과 함께 그를 반대하는 자에게 테러를 당했다.
그리고 마지막을 감옥에 갇혀 살다가 참수형을 받아 이른 나이에 죽었다.

그에게는 왜 그런 일이 있어야 했나 묵상하게 되었다.
그가 그렇게 된 것은 그가 악한 일을 해서가 아니다.
한 사람이라도 더 구원하고자 예수님의 사랑과 함께 복음을 전하였을 뿐이다.
그런 그에게 왜 하나님은 그런 무시무시한 고난을 허락하신 것일까?
그는 이렇게 말한다. 오직 하나님만 의지하기 위함이고
약한 데서 강한 것이 나오기 때문이라고
그리고 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루기 위함이라고

그렇다.
타락한 세상에서 타락한 육신을 가지고 정상적으로 살기는 힘들다.
그래서 육신을 거스르는 고난이 있어야 하나님만 바라볼 수 있다.
그래야 하나님이 주시는 힘으로 육신의 욕망을 뛰어넘어 온전한 하나님의 일을 할 수 있다.

지금도 믿음으로 살려고 하는 성도들에게 여러 시련이 찾아오는 것을 본다.
몸에 가혹한 질병이 생기고
성실하게 일하던 직장이 어려워져서 사임해야 하고
힘써 모아 놓은 물질을 도둑이 한 순간에 가져가는 일도 당한다.
그렇게 잘되기를 바라며 기도하는 아이에게 일이 생긴다.

이런 모든 일을 볼 때 답답하기 그지없지만
한 가지 분명한 것은 그 모든 것은 하나님이 허락하신 것이고
그 이유는 오직 하나님만 바라보기 위함이고 합력하여 선을 이루기 위함이다.

그러므로 낙심하지 말고, 포기하지도 말고, 끝까지 믿음으로 살아서
하나님이 이루시는 열매를 보도록 하자.

“Why do hardships come to believers?”

On the Family Radio, I recently heard a pastor talk about the suffering that apostle Paul endured.
He went through countless hardships.
He had a chronic illness. He was beaten numerous times. He faced all kinds of threats on land and sea. He was attacked by those who opposed him. And he spent his last days imprisoned and eventually was beheaded at a young age.
I thought about why these things had to happen to him.
It was not because he did something evil.
His only desire was to preach the gospel with the love of Christ so that he might save one more person. Then why did God allow him to go through such immense pain?
Paul said that it was so that he would rely solely on God.
And that strength comes from weakness.
And the purpose is so that all things work together for good.

This is true. It is difficult to lead a normal life in this corrupted world, for we are in broken flesh.
Thus, hardships that pain the flesh are necessary for us to look only to God.
By overcoming fleshly desires with the strength that God provides, we can do God’s righteous work.
Even today, various trials come to believers who try to live by faith.
Some may have a severe illness; some may have to resign because their business is not doing well; some may instantly lose everything they worked hard to save; and some may face unforeseen hardships happen to their children, even though they prayed for their wellbeing.
It can be frustrating when these things happen. But one thing for sure is that God is the One who allowed everything to happen. And the reason He allowed hardships in our lives is so that we might look only to God and to work everything for good.
Therefore, let us not be discouraged. Let us not give up.
Instead, let us continue to live by faith until the end and see God’s great accomplishments.
