“다양한 일이 일어나는 세상에서 터득한 지혜”

목회를 하다 보면 여러 성도들의 다양한 환경을 접하게 된다.
질병으로 시달리는 성도.
하는 일에 어려움을 겪는 성도.
가족이 죽어 장례를 치러야 하는 성도.
자녀 때문에 속상해하는 성도.

그러나 다른 한편에서는
질병에서 벗어나 건강하게 된 성도.
하는 일이 잘되어 번창해 가는 성도.
아이를 낳아 축하해야 하는 성도.
자녀들의 길이 형통하게 열리는 성도.

이러한 일들이 항상 겹쳐 일어나는 교회에서 인생의 희로애락을 매일 경험한다.
그리고 목사인 나는 어떻게 처신해야 할지 방황하게 된다.
기뻐하는 자 앞에서 슬퍼할 수 없고,
슬퍼하는 자 앞에서 기뻐할 수 없어 갈등 속에 있는 나를 본다.
그런 혼돈 속에 기도했다.
"제가 이런 경우에는 어떻게 처신해야 합니까? 고통을 당하는 성도를 생각하면 마음이 아프고, 기쁜 일이 있는 성도를 보면 감사가 나오는데 어떻게 해야 합니까?"
하나님이 이런 말씀을 주셨다.
"즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라."
명답이었다.

슬픈 일만 생각하면 인생이 너무 어둡다.
그러나 기쁜 일만 생각하면 세상에 빠지기 쉽다.
슬픔과 기쁨, 양면을 돌아보며 그것을 통해 선을 이루시는 하나님을 바라보는 것이 현명한 삶이라 깨닫게 되었다.

“Wisdom gained in a diverse world”

As a pastor, in ministry, I meet people from all walks of life.
Some suffer from illnesses, while others face difficulties at work.
Some have to plan funerals for the death of their loved ones.
Some are heartbroken over their children.
Conversely, there are also people who have recovered from illness and regained their health.
Some experience abundance in their careers, and some others celebrate the birth of a child.
And some witness their children prosper.

In church, we can see the joys and sorrows of life overlap and happen simultaneously.
As a pastor, I often find myself uncertain how to navigate these situations.
I cannot grieve in front of those who rejoice or rejoice in front of those who grieve.
In the midst of this ambiguity, I prayed, "God, what should I do in cases like this? My heart aches with those who are in pain, but I am gratefully joyful for those who are happy. What should I do?"
Then, God reminded me, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep."
It was the perfect answer.
Our lives will be too dark if we dwell only on the sadness of life.
However, we can easily get lost in the world if we focus only on the joys of life.
Thus, as I reflect on this, I realize that the wisest thing to do is to look to the Lord who works all things for good.
